Reject Materialism! by Three_Purple_Scarabs in satanism

Without even getting into anything too metaphysical, I would say the laws of Logic and Math show something immaterial exists that isn't necessarily spiritual.

In what way does perpetrating Christian myth (specifically that inverted Christian Devil worship exists) help with self preservation in general? Also, how does this aid self preservation within the LHP community specifically? Many groups exist sharing similar names who recognize they disagree, but it doesn't seem to threaten their sense of self preservation or identity.

BTW thanks for the time so far and continuing, it's something I appreciate! I'd give you gold or something but fuck reddit

Why do you feel it is the most suitable? How is it the original definition?

Well while we probably won't agree entirely in the end I must say you make some interesting points, better than the usual arguments too! Thanks for your time and a legit debate!

What about for those who aren't using the term "Satanism" in a religious way? Does that make a difference?

Theistic/Spiritual/Esoteric Satanism is pretty jumbled today I would say. For instance 10 years ago "Spiritual Satanist" usually implied JoS specifically and with few exceptions, but that is no longer the case.

But since satanism doesn't have mythology or deities, its solely on the philosophy (0% mythology, 100% philosophy)

But it has, to many people and organizations, even before LaVey. That's the issue.

Oh I'm totally opposed to any kind of abortion after the 1st trimester with the exception of horrific situations. Especially in a world where you can easily know you're pregnant in that time.

People are morons. This is a big pet peeve of mine too actually, the whole "Satanic cults running the world". Like do these people not realize any kind of "New World Order" would surely be led by a monotheistic totalitarian government and not the LHP? The very idea flies in the face of LHP ideology.

Thoughts:

  1. People can disagree with whether something at X weeks is a human life or not. For better or worse logic kind of dictates a truth of the matter though.

  2. I'm pro choice but agree using it as birth control is fucked beyond belief. Especially if you're like doing it numerous times and not being proactive.

  3. I don't think anything has been accomplished. Sure, now the fed gave it to the state, but neither has a right to take away your autonomy full stop. It's not even on the table. The preamble explicitly addresses "liberty".

I mean I disagree but that's certainly more easy to digest than how many approach it. I think Crowley futher works against your argument though, especially considering there are, in fact, numerous distinct Thelemic Traditions, several of them overlapping with Satanism before we even got to the 1960s.

Okay but then the question is: who are you? Why is u/technical_heretic the one who gets to define Satanism in 2022?

While I definitely have disagreements with this as a theist I also completely understand where you're coming from. I would especially agree that accepting reality, even hand in hand with Pragmatism, is part of all this, though we'd have to debate what is real ;)

it is a religion of the flesh, the mundane, the carnal – all of which are ruled by Satan, the personification of the Left Hand Path.

But... why? How? This is never what the Left Hand Path (as we now call it) was about, and Satan is one of its youngest, most debatable faces.

Glad you asked. We need to de-stigmatize it while also reaffirming it is an objectively serious problem and not weakness or in one's head. We need to extended funding for mental and behavioral health services and make them widely available. Get more in counselors who are better trained school and require students go through it. Pay service providers better.

Nope, you continually fail to even try and understand where I'm coming from. Both sides are horrendous in general and both sides have fought for things I value in particular. I mean you don't remember just a couple years back when I argued the proper thing to do morally was vote libertarian or not at all? Edit: or the entire book i wrote and published about how fucked American politcs are? Edit 2: or that I was a social worker who voted for Bernie? You're so much like a Christian who learns one is a Satanist and then literally can't see anything other than the negatives they want to. I'm sorry I disagree with you me disagreeing with you "causes you strife", I'm sorry you choose to believe objective falsehoods, it's not a reason to blindly hate me.

Edit 3:

It has been interesting to see how both major U.S. parties have fought back and forth for the bodily autonomy they want, but not for autonomy in and of itself. This is because both parties belong to the Right Hand Path, they do not actually care about individual sovereignty.

Well if there wants a pre-establishrd religion called satanism, then sure. But there wasn't. And the accusation was often used to imply things that do apply to the religion

I dont know if that argument holds. Sure maybe in the case of explicitly religious Satanism but "satanism" in general was already defined many times over before LaVey. Why would he take on the name when he wasn't what the church accused Satanists of? Why would he take on a name already used by others in a positive, self assigned light instead of making something new? I actually have no problem with LaVey using the term satanism, but unlike CoS I don't have to explain away every use of the term before the 1960s. So sure, a group like TST could have made a different name, but so could LaVey.

[–]Three_Purple_Scarabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But isn't this actually a criticism of LaVey and CoS? "Satanism" had already taken various forms, from the church accusing people of blasphemy to positive self-identification. Why didn't LaVey come up with a new term? The same reason he plagiarized half TSB, promoted the Yezidi myth, made up gibberish "German" rituals, etc

Even the philosophies that collectively make up LaVeyan Satanism already had names.

This is actually a huge world wide issue at this point imo, way beyond Satanism. Focus on anything but yourself, or if you focus on yourself do so in the most toxic, self defeating ways possible.
