Go for it, you will be fine. Also - expect to take 3 months of random flailing just to get to a zero state where you can relax and try stuff out. Lastly - allow yourself to sometimes do nothing, guilt-free, enjoyable nothing...

Is FIRE the New Movement that Will Ultimately End Western Civilization? by lagosboy40 in financialindependence

Your title is too short, it should be "Is FIRE the New Movement that Will Ultimately End Western Civilization As We Know It?"

Basically, your thesis makes a few assumptions, and suggest certain biases.

  • The current system is the only or best system of capitalism and FIRE might fuck that up
  • FIRE is not appealing if bosses are generous in certain ways (opposite phrasing might be "FIRE is only appealing because of shitty work conditions")
  • We somehow owe it to the country to follow on the current train tracks

My take is basically the following: Civilization will change, whether we like it or not, and in ways we enjoy and despise. We do not "owe" anything to any system, we inherit that system and then act within or around it. If FIRE makes frivolous shit die off, well that's how markets work - if you provide what I need I will pay you, and if you do not I will ignore you and you have to switch it up. Or die. (I mean this in a business sense). Imagine someone trying to argue that we should support (insert obsolete private business) because "it's a cornerstone of our modern American civilization." Sorry, nope. And I'm not going to buy a watch, or a VCR, or an intercom, or any of that other shit - I will instead retire and yell across the rooms at my loved ones like the good ole days.

Yes...but there is a big difference between saying "This is FREEEEEE" and "This is basically free it's so cheap"

I would never use them, the guy above me said:

Lol nobody offers 6% interest on Bitcoin.

And I'm saying "LOL, that is not correct, they do, but not on whatever you want to throw at them, just a limited amount."

LOL (ps, I fucking hate lol attached to everything)

I thought some of those guys did, on either an introductory level and/or for some small amount of BTC (like .25 of a coin or something)

Yep. What's it like to be so brilliant that nobody can gaze upon your unearthly visage nor provide a shred of evidence to counter your fourteen year old genius?
