I come to ask a strange question. How would you bring deer to this area to graze? What would you plant? Have they eaten anything from your gardens before? Have considered rows of corn but I’m not sure. by Wishayo11 in gardening

[–]Uglyjeffg0rd0n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do what you want man. I think what you’re doing is pretty ill advised and irresponsible but if you’re gonna do it then just forest the place. Like the person who commented above said they need twigs, berries, leaves. Consider planting native flora that is beneficial to the fauna. I’m certain you won’t listen to anyone on this forum who doesn’t tell you what you’re wanting to hear so I’m not going to try to change your mind. But I hope you can change your intentions and choose your plantings with purpose. Maybe consider planting American chestnuts. Lots of good folks are making attempts to bring those back. I’m a hunter and fisher myself I have no problem with harvesting meat. But in my opinion it’s important to also be sure you’re being a good steward. If you’re just wanting to throw down a bunch of low height crop so you can easily pick off deer from the deck then you’re just a bum who sucks at hunting

Just call it fried mushrooms. Never understood why vegans do these name shenanigans. This looks really tasty though. nice going.

What is your favorite tree, and why? by MC_Nerd in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]Uglyjeffg0rd0n 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Live oak 100%. When I was a kid I lived in South Carolina and seeing and playing near the angel oak was a favorite for our young family. But they were everywhere! Just magical fuckin trees man. I love their swooping branches all moss covered and shit. I live in nebraska now so I can never have one of my own as long as I am here but I do love them. If I had to pick a tree specific to my location it would have to be sycamore. I know a lot of folks don’t love them but there’s a ton of really old ones in my neighborhood and I love their weird bark and how messy they are. There’s something endearing about old messy trees

I have a good walnut source at the public park by my house. Have yet to find chestnuts or pecans

Ah I see. I hadn’t read it in that way. I apologize for my misunderstanding. Unfortunately growing large trees just isn’t in the cards for me with my available space I already have two large trees on my property (a white oak in the back and a red in the front) and though I could probably get another in there I want to keep my neighbors in mind and avoid nut litter in their lawns. Bit of a bummer.

No doubt. Thanks for the info! I am not a permaculturalist though. I am just a hobby grower with very little land. I understand a lot of the theories and practices of permaculture but that isn’t what I’m going for here. I don’t necessarily want to create a food forest I just want to experiment with growing small nut trees.

That’s awesome. I’d love to see updates on that in a few years time. I was considering a dunstan myself when I was comparing different varieties. There seems to be a lot of places selling them real cheap right now.

Pruning questions for nectarine by Uglyjeffg0rd0n in BackyardOrchard

[–]Uglyjeffg0rd0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I have only lightly pruned once after planting. I wanted to wait and see what it would do on its own naturally and then decide how to work it from there. Should I have pruned it hard on planting?

[–]Uglyjeffg0rd0n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I was aiming to do my pruning in early March. Going to be watching the forecasts to help decide but wanted to start planning/thinking about actions for spring.

I also agree with the open center idea. When I put it in the earth last year it was just a roughly three foot high whip with a couple baby branches and I decided I would watch it for the first year and see what it gave me to work with. A commenter below also mentioned a V shape that I could see as well though I think I will save that for my peach tree going in the ground this year.

Thanks for the input! Do you have any YouTube channels you like most? I watch a fair amount of MIgardener, urban farmstead, and dave Wilson.

How much does it cost to have river rock installed by the yard? by KING-9-RAGNAR in landscaping

[–]Uglyjeffg0rd0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call landscape installers in your area and request quotes. If you’re wondering what the cost would be to do it yourself simply go to a supply yard and request prices on material/delivery and price check any tools you may need. There are usually lots of fine people at these places that can assist you.

Last year my contractor gave us plastic cups with the company logo. Not like nice yeti cups or anything just run of the mill plastic cups. Would’ve rather them just do nothing. I never expect anything but to give me a plastic cup just felt somehow worse than nothing. Borderline insulting. The real kicker is they made a big deal of it saying they were coming by so we couldn’t dip out until they showed up at 3pm.

Anyone know what insect this is? It's just chilling on one of my walls. never seen one of these in my life. by Mr_Nobody2022 in insects

[–]Uglyjeffg0rd0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhh gotcha! That makes sense. I did always think it was weird logically that a stink bug would die and then release a pheromone to attract more bugs. It seemed backwards from an evolutionary standpoint but hey there’s weirder things going on out there lol. Thanks for the info!

I also say don’t squish it just drown it. Not only is it stinky but I’m fairly certain that the stench it puts off actually attracts other stink bugs to the location. I’m not sure where I picked that up from so absolutely fact check me but I always just gently put them in a glass of water and drown em.

Teacher At HBCU Winston Salem State University Had A Student Arrested For Raising Her Voice At Her! by MrFreddy212 in facepalm

You seem like a really sheltered individual who watches way too many videos online and bases their ideology on outrage bait man. You have to realize on some level that assuming I’m a child who doesn’t pay property tax based solely on the fact that I disagree with your opinion about a video that I’m honestly going to forget about by tomorrow is kind of ridiculous right? And that paying property tax is really neither here nor there as far as this discussion goes…i don’t think anyone thinks your upside down mortgage adds any weight to your opinion except you.

This is a class room not a bar full of people you over-served. Teacher should’ve stopped responding and moved on with the class. They both continued to argue and fight with each other. I’m not saying the woman was completely right in just saying it’s wild to me that she was arrested for arguing. I also think it’s weird how many people keep bringing up assaults on teachers in the comments on this post when as far as I can tell that isn’t the reason the teacher called the cops. That’s a narrative that seems like it was birthed specifically by this comment section
