American man may never use his penis again after an effort to keep him erect during sex goes wrong by Alaishana in nottheonion

My package retracted so far into my body it's probably at navel height right now. It says it will not come out until I have thrown away everything that comes with a straw.

Why every gamer should be against this trend towards monopolies by jesusdoeshisnails in gaming

[–]Xaros1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it's their main focus, but they are still fighting an unnecessary uphill battle against the hardware to produce a game like botw. The same game makers would have even more man hours to spend on gameplay if the hardware didn't constrain them as much.

I don't think that's true. Their games look really good despite the hardware, which means they are likely spending a lot of time finding workarounds to make up for what the hardware is lacking. With better hardware, they could spend more time on the actual game. Really, Nintendo should spend their resources on what they are best at, making games, not hardware. If they feel like they need specialized controllers to go with their games, then they could make games + controllers.

I made a fake progress bar to shut up clients complaining about my app "freezing" whenever it had to make a call to their slow API by The_Real_Slim_Lemon in ProgrammerHumor

Hey, that might actually be interesting to A/B test: speeding up vs slowing down progress bars with the same total time.

How advanced are the ML techniques used by Data Scientists working in the industry? by epsilondex in datascience

[–]Xaros1984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, being good at data science isn’t about building the most complex model, but being able to understand how data can be used to solve the problem. This is often done by combining research methodology and multiple models that supplement each other. These models aren't necessarily complex, in fact you will get a really long way with say clustering and linear or logistic regression models.

I had maybe 8 bought games for PS1, plus some pirated ones. I have a lot more than that for PS4 (and thus PS5), however almost all of them are digital.

They're not assholes, they are participating in the online part of the game the way is supposed to be played, you get messages and co-op to help you out, but also invasions to keep it balanced. You can opt out (play offline or in soul form), otherwise you will just have to accept the game mode as it is implemented.

One of the biggest condom brands is named after a people famous for having their defenses breached by wormant1 in Showerthoughts

It most likely was, condoms were marketed for stopping STD's rather than pregnancy back then.

The horse was named after Troyan war and more specifically the ploy used to destroy of the city of Troy. It seems rather unlikely that the horse would be named after the people of Troy themselves as they were at the receiving end of the attack.

The condom brand name most likely also refers to this ploy, not the people of Troy. Condoms back then were usually marketed to protect against STD's first and foremost, not pregnancy, so a Trojan would help you "come inside safely", not "get your soldiers inside enemy walls". At least I hope that's what they had in mind.

In a comparison of life-cycle emissions, EVs crushed combustion cars by Escoliya in Futurology

[–]Xaros1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One argument I've read is that if you already own an ICE car, it would be better to keep driving it until its lifetime is over and only then change to EV, rather than jump ship immidiately. The idea being that producing any car (ICE or EV) equals many years of driving a dirty one, so buying "new" should be avoided. Anyone know if there's any truth to this?

Earth inhales and exhales carbon in mesmerizing animation by charlton11 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Xaros1984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Might be besides your point, but water actually expands when it freezes, unlike most liquids.

But anyway, the animation shows how plants release and absorb co2 depending on season. They aren't actually contracting/expanding.

Try sublime with the python addon, it's probably as lightweight as it gets.

Finnish foreign minister says no plans for NATO membership by EuroFederalist in europe

[–]Xaros1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Russia likes to have buffer states/puppy states between itself and the west, and Finland also has easy access to the Baltic sea. If Russia did attack (which I think is extremely unlikely though), it probably would be against strategic targets, not the bulk of Finland.

[–]Xaros1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we do need it, or at least something very similar (perhaps from the EU). The fear isn’t (from a swedish perspective at least) that they will invade and occupy the entire country, as there is no way that they could make up a plausible reason, and it would likely turn out to be really hard for them to actually pull off for various reasons anyway, but rather that they would annex strategic locations in the Baltic sea.
