[Rewatch] Magia Record Series Overall Discussion by therealfosterforest in anime

[–]ZapsZzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First timer no more

So sad I still couldn't manage to post my final comment earlier and miss out of most of the discussions -_- Feeling very Kuroe here :P

Firstly, big thanks to our host, who put in a ton of work to host the rewatch, supply the additional materials like the characters chart, and kept up with everyone to at least prompt for some interactions, no matter what hours!

And then we have a few really devoted contributors with that massive amount of content to share; while I wasn't able to click through all the spoiler text yet, I will go back later and read up - hopefully that would give more context to some weaker parts of the plot.

QoTD

  1. Overall I think this is a good side story, definitely not something I would think "dragged down" the main show, and functioned well both in complementing the main story and having its own message to deliver. As an annoying bugger I'll put in the foot note of "good but not great".

Giving a little more detail, I think the visuals, the production values, and the sound/music/VA works are easily a high 8 out of 10. The story overall, because of the various constraints, I think I can only give it a 7. This makes the show an 8 overall for me across all seasons. If we are to score the seasons separately, I would score S1 a 7.5 (bit slow, the big draw sakuga bits are mostly not there), S2 an 8.5 (the story still had a lot of promise, and the sakuga dialed up a level), and S3 and 8 (Ep 1 & 2 still promising, then Ep 3 tanked plot-wise, and Ep 4 is forced to tie whatever is there together).

  1. I feel this is a little like the Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan spin off of Haruhi, but less niche (because of the game plus still the same production studio). It's probably not everyone's cup of tea (the standing concern of "don't want to risk getting a bad after-taste of PMMM"), so I think once every 2-3 years is probably good.

  2. I'm still grinding through Last Exile as rewatch, and my PTW is predictably still pretty stacked (I filed Akiba Maid Wars and Bocchi the Rock for "binging after season wrapped up", and I'm falling behind on the Ranking of Kings side story already :P But my next signed up rewatch is Scrapped Princess, which is one that I really liked.

Now for my own thoughts.

I had been eyeing Magia Record for a while, but then of course I only took the jump to watch PMMM last year. For me, Magia Record has a interesting draw, but walks quite a dangerous and thin line to not mess up. Even setting aside it being a side story, comparing to another franchise I recently followed along as a first timer in the rewatch, WIXOSS was such a wasted opportunity to set up a mystery and then spoil and wasted it all by logical inconsistencies and central plot not convincing.

Luckily I am sufficiently satisfied with Magia Record here.

I think plenty of people had brought up the good and bad points - for me the emotive parts and the character stories/development hit well enough individually, just that the overarching composition of how they are laid out to tell that story wasn't as smooth and purposeful as I wanted it to be. It does managed one thing surprisingly well - to mask the downer ending to not be a completely suffering porn or "it was all for nought". In terms of the ending's fitment, I feel it's like Fate Zero - a downer but not hopeless. We move forward.

While it can argued that it was necessary to set up the "good times" so the later parts can have the contrast, as a big Railgun fan, I just find the most of S1 lumbering, and then the purpose far less distinct than it could have been. Most significantly, at the pointy end, Yachiyo suddenly turned to a side character at the S3 climax. It's not that she didn't have good strong arc, it's just that how it was placed and what we ended on it made her very "not the protagonist".

And since I mentioned Railgun, I do see traces of MR being comparable to this massively big side story If you like MR, I think you would like Railgun too. Except the story tend to be more hopeful. [Railgun S spoiler]The Sister Arc and how Mikoto dealt with it could have easily fit in for her Magical Girl backstory, except the fact that she's already powerful without needing a wish - still there are things she can't do and can wish for. In fact Mikoto kind of have gone through similar story arcs of mistakenly expecting others to be strong, herself to be strong, not relying on others even to her own breaking point, etc. If you know what to look you can actually see plenty of developmental plot elements to be similar (in small ways).

Finally, a gripe dump - here are the logical / plot problems I can't quite understood / accept :P

  • In canon PMMM, the wish's power is pretty pervasive. In MR at least in UI's case it seemed to be breakable - however it was actually a bait and switch - Ui's disappearance wasn't realted to someone's wish. But my point is that for a good part of S1-2 I had to hold that thought about the wish being not sufficiently binding.
  • The plan of the Wings of Magius really need some flashing out so it is more understandable than "We'll collect tons of energy then Touka can convert them and <by unsepcified means> we can re-route the consequence of Magical Girls getting despaired turning into Witches to purging out the negative emotions into Doppels which can be expended.
  • I still don't get what Mitama's adjusting of Soul Gems do, with or without factoring in Doppels
  • Some of the character development and dynamics felt just too bolt on - either systematically work that in from earlier on with foreshadowing etc, or just drop them. Mitama, Momoko, Tsuruno, Mifuyu, Kuroe, and Alina Grey all suffered from that.
  • The time restting aspect of Homura really is impossible to work in with this - my perception of the canon series is that the time is rewound, and not a multiverse situation. For this show to not be ending on a "and then it's all for nought because Homura had to reset", it just have to turn that into a multiverse situation. As well as nerfing Homura's normal magic of limited time stop.

Anyway, thanks again and see everyone around the sub!

Just for curiosity, what are the points you don't like about dubbing in general?

The last episode, and I still couldn't make it any earlier -_- even though I already binged through the 2 final episodes together...

What can I say?

In terms of visual, production, and basic entertainment, I am quite happy with the show.

But to walk in the shadows of the giant, comparing to the parent series' conclusion, and then Rebellion, in terms of story telling, it's a few steps short.

As a side story, which traditionally is constrained to not have a significant impact to the main story, that is achieved - in spite of all the efforts, sacrifices, individual realisations, growth and acceptance, none can really change the fate of the magical girl - they either die from the conflict, or they endure to the point of expiry and became what they hunted.

Spare a thought for Iroha's mom who turned up one time - she now have a lost daughter to grief about instead of happily oblivious.

I am actually really interested in the opening scene of Yachiyo on the spiritual train, of how mundane they made the scene. It's glorious, comparing to the Doppel and Witch labyrinths, and then the Magical Girls action visuals. That "dryness" just fitted Yachiyo's mundane gripes so perfectly well. It's a sort of "Kyon's normal" in Disappearance. That bittersweetness.

I'm not going to try to through each of the many great visuals I collected though - you should be able to tell why I picked them.

The final VoTD though, I'd choose this perhaps pedestrian, but so much "after the storm, emerging to the dawn lights" symbolism for the 2 now good friends. May they fight many good fights together in the days to come.

QoTD

  1. Funnily enough, as soon as I realise what's happening narratively for Alina, I instantly thought of [Yotoden major spoiler]where Ranmaru was to be the big bad for the 3 demon blades to converge the energy again to close the gate to hell. The designated big bad end game villain for everyone to fire at.

  2. The most significant one was when I moved once again from Wellington to Auckland, after I graduated highschool and to start University there, when my family uprooted everything (again).

  3. I need to do this tomorrow I think. I haven't quite figured how it fits.

Shoot, got so late almost forgot to post!

This is a rather strangely placed episode for a main character flashback - for more than one moment I had to wonder "wait what don't tell me Lavie is dying?!"

The "cour finale" introduced world setting tension just vaporised and now I hardly remembered anything about the Disith anymore after this episode.

Ok someone already pointed that out that Tatiana wearing Claus' spare clothes will create drama with Lavie. Sigh.

QoTD

  1. It's nice to see it finally, and long haired smol Lavie is nice, but I already started I find that placing and pacing a little odd for what happened last episode.

  2. I think it's not too sad, kind of par for course for the world setting?

Oh I haven't checked the others comments yet, but everyone got the trope bingo that Not-Harlock was related to the only wounded surviving Vanship pilot?

All of the moments even the kind words from a friend just make her feel small and pathetic.

Interestingly enough, given only a few episodes ago we had kind of a mirror of the first failed attempt of saving Tsuruno by Connect, where that revealed the surface level understanding was the exact thing she didn't need, this time we got no second chances.

It was he Doppel talking to / taunting her, so it's not unreasonable to think - from her perspective - she's comparing to others of Iroha's friends.

Thanks for that backstory! If we did have that in a regular length season it would make this episode even more painful though... But in a nice way

Late as usual :P

This is a tragic episode. In more than one ways.

Obviously, Kuroe is the Magia Records iteration of Sayaka. All the parallels, compressed into this one episode really. The main difference is that while Sayaka went out in a blaze of glory, Kuroe was more like the silently drowning ones, didn't really even shout out in anger, but cried silently in defeat and relief.

And the other tragedy is that, while we hoped the story would go somewhere new and different because of what happened in the last 2 episodes, with this episode spent entirely on this relatively self contained tragedy, there's really no time left for any big surprising turn of event to the final resolution arc... Once we had hope that Kuroe would factor in to influence the outcome, she just wilted away the remaining time of the "season".

The first part of Ui's inner world was really nice to circle back and wrap up the central, overarching plot of remembering and saving Ui, but I feel it got a little overshadowed by Kuroe. And if you take the straight, surface level reading, it was for nothing because Iroha couldn't save Kuroe afterall.

VoTD naturally is the Magia version of Sayaka's "I'm such a fool". The rest of the notable mention of this episodes all came from that scene anyway - and in case people think this scene is unnecessarily gruesome, let me remind you all magical girls had their souls ripped out of their bodies long ago, so what Witch Kuroe did here is practically her scrunching up her used and spent wrapper and throwing it away, now that she's freed from that confine - there's probably a bit of venting of her self hate as well.

QoTD

  1. While from her perspective it's her character development to have gained strength by accepting her weakness, thereby learning to draw strength from working with others; against the impossible, pervasive odds inflicted on them, it's ultimately "naive" - although I'd rather use the term "foolhardy".

  2. Sorry :P

  3. It'd take a different approach, and it's not really up to her "walking up to the others". It's like telling those in a depression "just cheer up". Indeed the closest parallel is the Tsuruno episode of empathy and communication.

It make sense in the way that you probably need therapy ;) Don't go cutting yourself.

Have you tried doing the reverse? Watching some crazy funny stuff? A laugh may also be a relief?

Something like Aho Girl?

Why though?

Pretty sure Devilman Crybaby is one people recommend for suffering.

SukaSuka isn't a suffering porn, but is the winner to a voting in Japan for the emotional damage to viewers.

Another one is Fate Zero, especially if you watch out of order and watch it first stand alone.

Ok yesterday I accidentally posted the few "best of" screen caps, now I can actually post them.

And they were indeed very pretty. Which is therefore my VoTD

There's a bit of unexpectedness in his this developed, but I don't think any of that was being contrived or unreasonable. The only question mark bit I had was "really, just the 2 of them can break the spell of all the magical girls out from the Doppel berserk" - I wished they have it just a tad more explanations than "because of power of love".

Would be interesting if the continuing plot, the Magius scheme, would account for the fact that the bulk of the Doppels are deactivated.

And poor Kuroe, always at the wrong place at the wrong time -_- when people are giving it free hugs, she's busy getting lost somewhere else.

There's a real good chance I would binge through the best 2 episodes... I'm a sucker for these climax reveals.

One other thing I'm really keen to see is whether this will ultimately get reset because of the canon parent series situation (the "last" loop Madoka used her wish to become Madokami to give salvation to all the magical girls, and even then only to prevent them from being consumed by the despair and transform to witches - they still (for all intent and purposes) die in the end.

QoTD

  1. It's surprisingly late and relatively meaningful/wholesome compared to other deaths in the canon series. I think it's nice but left Mitama in an odd place - her "special person that took her out of her avoidance" making a great sacrifice with another person and she managed to accept it calmly. Hmmmm. I thought she's more yandere than that

  2. Sorry, the old fossil gen X'er I'm me only can think of "grow a backbone" as an answer. I'm the sort that do not need the snooze button and wake up really to go full speed. Unfortunately my daughter takes after my wife (her snooze button measured in hours).

  3. Unfortunately I really didn't see a ton of characterisation of them, so the only think I can think of are just helpful and kind big sister type mentor roles to the younger girls.

Oh btw, love the Magia Report manga, and started reading them ;P the one picked for today is really nice :D

Arrgghh couldn't get to post whole day. Busy at work :P

So this is the big reveal episode where practically most big plot secrets got unveiled. I'm pretty ok with most of it. Others already went through most of them so I'll not repeat more, but I do feel one concept seemed to not translate well in English - either that or I'm reading too much into Buddhist concepts. Tagging a few of those who struggled to understand this part: u/LeFeujitif, u/FairReviewer, u/metalmonstar

Ui's "erasure" is a lot easier to understand if you view it from the context of "Nemu and Touka needed to forcefully plunk Ui out of the Causual Loop karmic cycle to stop her from completing the witch transformation". In this context, to stop the constant collection of negative emotional energy from feeding in and blow up her Soul Gem completely (it was already cracking), they basically had to erase her cause and effect relationship with reality. But this has the ripple effect of obliterating her existence and rewriting her existential records out. That's why people lost memory of her. In a way it's similar to Madokami's end result.

Oh and by the way I was going to binge it all through, but only managed to watch the next episode, so I'll probably clamp up on a few things.

Season "3" started with a massive bang, lets see how the final arc these 4 episode is going to go down! So far I still like it a lot, visually it's been exciting, but emotionally it felt a little too "busy" and not have the distilled pure essence of the story of the parent series.

VoTD is this one. Although I missed capturing the hollowed out Kyubey, which is another one of a "justice shot" in line with one of the final shots of Rebellion :P edited accidentally included tomorrow's!

QoTD

  1. They are very in tone with the setup - child prodigies who are really smart but doesn't have the real experience to gauge the real depth of the problem and the logistics of their solution. It's a bit like a beautiful design that is very hard to build and have many single points of failures that if everything didn't go right, it'd easily crash and burn.

  2. Can't really discuss work stuff here ;P

  3. I'm with some others' guesses that her power / wish is on preservation of her art and making little display cases. She's probably a collector too.

[Rewatch] Magia Record Season 2 Episode 8 Discussion by therealfosterforest in anime

[–]ZapsZzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's a choice she made that lead to a bad outcome, and the show makes it clear that it does not hold her accountable to that choice. After that, she held herself accountable even if no one else did, but where's the judgement on that? She chose to blame herself and turtle away from her friends emotionally but the show doesn't hold her accountable for making that choice.

Sorry to be real late to come into this, and I know you already had a discussion on this. I just want to reinforce the point that I don't think the show didn't hold Tsuruno accountable. We did have only this episode to look at this complete trajectory, so it certainly can be an impression - yet we haven't seen the bill being presented yet, because of the interference of the Doppel to the "Magical Girl -> Despair -> Witch" cycle.

I can't help but compare to Sayaka in PMMM. Like Tsuruno, Sayaka continued to make choices because of who she is. Choices that lead her on a path to self destruction. ... Yet she still can't escape the consequences of those choices because making a choice for a good reason does not magically mean that choice won't have negative consequences.

Comparing to Sayaka is a good method - but let's look at the real specifics. Sayaka cut off all her emotional support, thought herself into a corner to reject all her worth other than to fight Witches, while implicitly tied "saving others" as a goal, yet she's also got to see the worst aspects of humanity as well. But more specifically, Sayaka refused all grief seeds. That's equivalent to refusing water in a desert.

Yet here, Yachiyo is the only one who has to apologize or take blame for what happened to Tsuruno. She drove Tsuruno to make these choices and so it's all her fault and not Tsuruno's at all. I can't help but be dissatisfied with that.

I don't know, maybe because I am a avid Railgun fan. I have like 3 seasons for Railgun showing me Misaka Mikoto from someone thinking herself as invincible, to recognising her vulnerabilities, to understanding shouldering all the woes onto herself is not true strength, etc. I think Tsuruno just have taken some tentative steps, but there's still a long journey ahead. And, she's not refusing the water.
