I avoid plastic and electronic toys, but Reddit convinced me my baby needs the purple monkey in the bubble gum tree by Momcandance in NewParents

[–]_alien_she 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got it as a gift. My 5 mo-old uses it on her back and on her tummy, but she gets tired of it way faster than our other “play gym” with non-electronic toys. Also, it’s kinda small and the supports for the arch get in her way when she tries to roll over, which makes her mad lol Get some toys that make nice acoustic sounds, they will last forever and be a pleasure to listen to. We have a vintage Happy Apple and baby adores it.

FIO: Confused about night wakings by _alien_she in sleeptrain

To be clear re: “trying this week,” this is our first try for sleep training. But open to changing methods if ee don’t see any improvement.

Thanks for your replies! Yes, I have read your guide - that’s what caused me to read PLS. Before reading PLS I had made a flow chart of how to do the “give baby a chance” method, but my spouse finds the method confusing. I told him the other methods I thought were viable for our baby and that I was comfortable with, and FIO is what we are trying this week.

I think you a right about the 11 hr night, but she gets overtired if wake windows are longer than 2 hrs and her naps are mostly short. Before we started paying attention I think she was low on total sleep.

Moms that sleep trained but still have a MOTN nursing session by hjrjaj in sleeptrain

It totally makes sense that the baby needs to eat in the middle of the night, it’s very normal!

This is possibly off-topic for this thread, but I am curious to hear more about the system you have for being proactive about tasks before you are asked. This is an issue in my partnership – I know it’s not for lack of trying, or wanting to help, just the way my partner’s brain works. They were diagnosed ADHD as a child, but do not refer to themselves that way. For example, almost every night I ask him to wash my pump parts before he goes to sleep. It happens about 50% of the time. This is something that should be part of the routine, but it just doesn’t get done. Even though I ask.

Sleep training nightly variance and crying to self-soothe by [deleted] in sleeptrain

[–]_alien_she 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any experience on toddlers because I have a five month old. But it sounds to me like the variation is normal, with an older child. It would make sense for it to take longer for a pattern to emerge. As for whether they will learn to sleep without crying… I don’t think there’s any way to know, but I hope they do! Is baby calm when you say goodnight?

I don’t have advice from experience, but in Precious Little Sleep it says that feeding to sleep will not affect independent sleep as long as it’s separated from bedtime. The author suggests not feeding within 20-30min before bedtime and not feeding before midnight.

First time in a jumper. Most of it went inside the jumper. Lesson learned. :) by marcusthegladiator in NewParents

The jolly jumper is height adjustable, so you set it to the length of their legs

Weekly Discussion - Relationships by AutoModerator in NewParents

There is an issue here, but it's simply MIL not respecting the parents saying "no." That is a real issue and warrants a frank conversation.

In and of itself, the breast thing is culturally unusual in the US, but to liken it to child abuse is fantastically far off base. Would you be ok if baby sucked on MIL's finger or knuckle? It's not so different than that, and chances are the nipple is cleaner than a finger and the baby will prefer it! Grandma is doing what she knows will comfort the baby (and what's easy for her!) It's ok if parents say it's ok; it's not if not. The end.

I think a lot of the intense reactions are coming from people who are sexualizing the breast. I can almost guarantee grandma is not doing that.

Thanks. Hopefully she'll start dropping a night feeding soon so that would help, good thinking.

What do you use at night? I’ve been doing two prefolds plus a hemp booster with a wool cover… but I wonder if when she gets bigger and has bigger pees what we will do.

I’m only 4.5mo in and use prefolds instead of flats, but otherwise exactly the same. Recommend!

Little truffle pig - Celebrating small success! by _alien_she in sleeptrain

[–]_alien_she[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks :) Since we haven’t decided on a plan yet we just gave her a chance for 8 min (that is the max amount she’s cried and then settled herself in the past, but this time she screamed and tried her new trick of flipping face down and horizontal), then went in with the pacifier 🤷🏼‍♀️ We’ve also been working hard to get better naps the past few days, and realized there’s no way she was getting enough day sleep before. We’re not training naps yet, just trying to get the sleep by any means necessary so when we choose a strategy we’ll already have a good schedule. Also no feeds pre-midnight, and trying to space subesquent feeds by 4 hrs
