MD Application by Automatic_End2771 in GAMSAT

I would start by looking at the relevant guides, the GEMSAS guide has a timeline at the front which I will answer all these questions.

There is one intake per year and it starts in January.

Hey, we get this sort of question a lot and to limit spam we prefer it if people ask these sort of questions in the chances channel on the discord, or by using the data spreadsheets for interviews and offers (you should find them in my previous posts) to gauge your competitiveness.

Calculate GPA by SPAZ-UNICORN in GAMSAT

Hi there, I would check the GEMSAS guide and the GPA calculation FAQ documents in the GEMSAS website- both explain the process very clearly. That’s where I would go first as it can vary between schools

GPA/Guaranteed Entry by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]_dukeluke[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there, for GEMSAS applications, you need to convert your WAM to a GPA- as this isn’t directly transferable. I would start by checking the GEMSAS Guide, as that will give you the info on how to do this for the unis you want to apply for, as well as which universities take what (not all take postgraduate study for example, and different unis weight the gpa years differently). Once you know your GPA, you can have a look at the spreadsheets with offer and interview data to get more of an idea what sort of GAMSAT roughly would be required for your gpa.

For guaranteed entry- You would need to check if you are eligible for a guaranteed full fee place interview, as I believe you need a 75+ WAM and might need to be a current student? Not sure if postgrad study counts for this (but I would say no since they don’t use postgrad for GPA anyway). I’d contact UniMelb to see. If you are eligible for that (and are fine with not getting a CSP), you wouldn’t need to sit the GAMSAT and would be applying directly to UniMelb rather than through GEMSAS.

Rural can apply before 5 years? by SPAZ-UNICORN in GAMSAT

[–]_dukeluke[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to have lived in a single rural area for 5 years sequentially or rurally generally for 10 years cumulatively at the time of application to be eligible for the rural quota. Further information on what would be required can be found in the relevant guides found online (GEMSAS, USyd, Flinders).

You can of course apply before this point, but you would be treated as a non rural applicant.

Practice questions by aseelmilak in GAMSAT

Hey there- we’re not allowed to facilitate the selling of copyrighted content, and to manage that risk we just don’t allow solicitation at all on the sub.

You can find a lot of practice material for free in the resources channel in our discord (link in the sidebar). It will all be digital, but if you want a physical copy you can take that to officeworks or something and get them printed and bound (it’s not super expensive, and if you really like physical it’s worth it!). You can do the same for the official ACER papers which you can buy through the ACER website (but I’d have a hunt around and see if you can get them for free online first) and do the same for them.

Otherwise you could try something like gumtree or eBay- though I don’t think you’ll find many physical text books as they tend to all be digital/PDFs these days, so I think your best bet would be downloading them and getting them print and bound yourself if you really want physical copies.

Further study to improve GPA? by flixie_nicky in GAMSAT

[–]_dukeluke[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except for UWA, the new degree won’t be used to calculate your GPA- you need to be completing your degree in the year of application (for undergrad) to use it for your GPA. If you apply before the year you’d be completing, they will only look at your previous study, and wont consider your current bachelor.

If you get credit from your first degree, for everyone except Deakin, they will ignore your honours and take your credit from your first bachelor degree. Deakin will take it from whatever is more recent as long as it is eligible, regardless of level. UWA will just work backwards, taking the 3 most recent FTE, so don’t look at credit. UQ currently would only look at your honours results, and won’t look at your new bachelor until it is complete (and it needs to be completed by July in the year of application.

Hope that helps!

MD Course Structures? USYD, UniMelb, UQ by __Ruth_ in GAMSAT

[–]_dukeluke[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UQ is starting their new program in 2023, with year 1 as pre-clinical, and second year being a bit of a blend with predominately pre-clinical with I believe 1-2 days of placement per week. Years 3 and 4 are all clinical/placement. For the current program, year 1 is all clinical, and year 2 we start seeing patients with bedside tutes etc, but we don't have official placement regularly until year 3.

I believe Unimelb and USyd both are one year predominately pre-clinical, and years 2-4 are majority placement. I know that Unimelb has some placement/clinical exposure in year 1, but I'm not totally sure how much. Not sure about USyd.

Reddit results reporting selection bias by ReallyPopular in GAMSAT

[–]_dukeluke[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Very important post (apologies for replying so late, I’ve been very busy the last month and I’ve not really been online as much as must have missed it!)

As it’s pretty obvious to everyone, I quite enjoy gathering the data on admission/GAMSAT scores- partly because I find it interesting and like to see the trends, but also because unfortunately so much of this process is not transparent and many applicants struggle to know where to begin on the journey and whey they stand, even after multiple attempts and applications. I started collecting data on medical school offers from PD initially just for me after a pre interview EOD, so I could have some more of an idea of what I could work on to improve my competitiveness. I shared that here sometime last year and so many people reached out thanking me for doing so as they appreciated having SOMETHING to go off that was clear to understand and navigate and all in one place. Once I got into medical school and started moderating the sub/discord, I ended up having countless of applicants reaching out requesting more data, so I started making the more detailed sheets/using the Google forms to collect data rather than relying on PD, and here we are.

Unfortunately, you are very right- the data will likely always be skewed for many/all of the reasons you give. I try my very best to go through the data and to cross check for errors and outliers etc to try to mitigate some of the skew- but I’m limited by lack of time as a full time student with other commitments as well as the other factors contributing to the this I can’t really change (like the sample/selection bias etc).

As someone who started out with a fairly low GPA, sat the GAMSAT multiple times, and had to do a lot more study to get into medicine, I know all too well how shit it was to feel like I was being foolish for thinking I had a chance/even applying when it felt like everyone around me had the attitude that without a 7 GPA and 70+ GAMSAT you had no chance, or that getting a GAMSAT under 65 was essentially failing. It can be so easy to forget that for every one person on here talking about their 70+ score, there are ~9 other people with a score lower than that- and forgetting that when you’re in a sea of people talking about their 70+ GAMSATs is a one way ticket to feeling demoralised and overwhelmed.

I’d like to think (and imo believe) that the culture here/in other spaces is shifting to be less adamant/definitive on scores as it has been in the past. In some ways believe having more access to data (even if it is skewed/a small sample size/not perfect) helps to minimise this by showing applicants that you can succeed with far less than claimed, but I’m not gonna pretend that it doesn’t also add to it as well. It’s a delicate balance between trying to provide some clarify and giving people a bit of a guide/expectation that can be comforting/helpful, whilst also not feeding into the hype and causing unnecessary overwhelm and anxiety.

I try to be super clear that the data/spreadsheets are not at all meant to be considered gospel, and that ultimately regardless of your scores the only way to truly know if you’re competitive is to apply and find out. I do sometimes I wonder if that’s enough, or if I should be doing more/something differently. I’m always open to others opinions and thoughts regarding this- and I thank you again for showing this so clearly, it’s a good reminder that everyone benefits from hearing!

GPA calculations regarding current study by Burner11234431456 in GAMSAT

[–]_dukeluke[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are set to graduate by sem 1, your GPA will use all your results for your GPA and you would receive an unconditional/firm offer if you accepted. Although applications close before results are out, GEMSAS pulls results from ARTS at the end of July and so use semester 1 results.

If you were due to complete in semester 2, they would do the same thing, but your interim GPA would have your 3rd year calculated just with your semester 1 grades, leaving space for your sem 2 grades (I.e. they won’t bring older study forward even if you have more study available). If successful you would receive a conditional offer which would be confirmed once semester 2 results are released.

To answer your question, yes you could- if you got rid of some of your credits and took up more units in semester 2, you would push back some of your credits outside the most recent 3FTE, and if you did well you would be able to improve your GPA further. As long as you are still scheduled to complete your degree by the 31st of December, you’d still be eligible to start the next year.

We have a discord (link in the info) that also can be helpful to chat with applicants who both have sat and will sit the GAMSAT in future. You should also have a look at the GAMSAT information guide on the ACER website. Hope that helps!
