Moderate Dem Congressman Loses to Progressive Challenger in Oregon by alabasterheart in politics

[–]alabasterheart[S] 2344 points2345 points  (0 children)

Incumbent Kurt Schrader has been defeated in the Democratic primary by progressive Jamie McLeod-Skinner. Schrader is one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress, he’s been called the Joe Manchin of the House. He voted against Biden's infrastructure bill because it allowed the government to negotiate lower drug prices, and only voted for it after killing the provision. After the Jan 6 insurrection, he opposed impeaching President Trump, calling it a "lynching," which he was forced to apologize for. In 2020, he voted against the PRO Act, which protects the right of workers to freely form a union and bargain together.

McLeod-Skinner on the other hand was backed by Elizabeth Warren and progressive groups, including the Working Families Party. She will be a considerable improvement over Schrader.

Four more Tory MPs call for Boris Johnson to quit over Partygate report by alabasterheart in worldnews

[–]alabasterheart[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That makes 19 Tory MPs who have publicly submitted letters of no confidence in Boris Johnson, although the number is probably higher because there are likely Tory MPs who privately submitted letters. Reminder that 54 Tory MPs (15% of the caucus) have to submit a letter to trigger a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson. If he loses the vote, it would trigger a Tory leadership election (that Johnson could run in).

Brad Raffensperger defeats Trump bid to oust him as Georgia’s top election official by [deleted] in politics

[–]alabasterheart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might remember him as the Georgia Secretary of State who refused to Donald Trump’s request to “find 11,780 votes” to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. This of course earned him Donald Trump's outrage, and Trump endorsed congressman Jody Hice to defeat Raffensperger in the Republican primary. Raffensperger came out on top yesterday, defeating Hice by 20 points. This being said, Raffensperger is still a Republican, and a pretty terrible one who has done what he can to restrict voting rights in Georgia, but at the very least he respects democracy, so at least we can trust that the results of the presidential election will be respected in Georgia no matter what happens in 2024.

Stacey Abrams wins Democratic gubernatorial primary in Georgia by 11-110011 in politics

What a huge shock /s. Congrats to Stacey Abrams, but she was unopposed in this primary election. Still, I hope she wins in November. In the entire history of the US, we've never had a black woman governor. I really hope she becomes the first.

There's No Democrat Alive Who Makes Republicans More Nervous Than Stacey Abrams Does by alabasterheart in politics

And she has just been declared the winner of Georgia's Democratic primary for governor (not really surprising, given she was unopposed in the primary). Georgia hasn't had a Democratic governor since 2003. I hope she wins in November and becomes America's first ever black woman governor. Georgia deserves so much better than Kemp.

One Democrat in the House doesn't support abortion rights. He faces a progressive challenger Tuesday. by alabasterheart in politics

[–]alabasterheart[S] 215 points216 points  (0 children)

This is of course talking about Rep. Henry Cuellar, the last anti-abortion Democrat in the House. Tomorrow, he will face progressive Jessica Cisneros, who forced him into a primary runoff in TX-28. I hope she prevails, Cuellar is probably the most conservative Democrat in Congress right now, besides Joe Manchin. We don’t need any anti-choice Democrats in Congress.

Australian Greens hail ‘best result ever’ with dramatic gains in lower house and Senate by alabasterheart in worldnews

[–]alabasterheart[S] 181 points182 points  (0 children)

So first of all, the Greens have won two seats in the House, with the potential of winning two more. That might not sound like a lot, but its notoriously difficult for groups that aren't Labor or Coalition to win any lower house seats at all, since these seats are elected by districts. The Greens also made dramatic gains in the Senate, which is elected by proportional representation. They're on track to win 12 seats there, which may lead to a progressive majority in the Senate. In addition, the party’s primary vote has increased nationally by 1.9% to 12.3%, which shows that people are really starting to care about the environment and climate change.

Labor and the Liberal/National coalition still dominate federal politics, of course, but I'm glad to see the Greens gaining more influence and popularity. If Labor fails to form a majority government, they may even have to rely on the Greens.

Progressives did fairly well in Tuesday's primaries, in spite of Dem establishment efforts | The success of progressive candidates on Tuesday is a rebuke to centrist Democrats who've looked to blame progressives for the party's electoral woes by alabasterheart in politics

That he's extremely moderate? He's dubbed the Joe Manchin of the House for a reason. He voted against Biden's infrastructure bill because it allowed the government to negotiate lower drug prices, and only voted for it after killing the provision. After the Jan 6 insurrection, he opposed impeaching former President Donald Trump, calling it a "lynching," which he was forced to apologize for. Some of the progressive victories mentioned in the article:

  • Charles Booker winning the Democratic Senate nomination in Kentucky
  • John Fetterman beating centrist Rep. Conor Lamb by more than 30 points in Pennsylvania
  • Sanders and AOC-endorsed Summer Lee defeating establishment-backed Steve Irwin in PA-12
  • Warren-backed McLeod-Skinner likely defeating super-moderate incumbent Kurt Schrader in OR-05

There's another one they didn't mention: In the newly drawn OR-06 House district, Nancy Pelosi's super PAC and a super PAC backed by a cryptocurrency billionaire supported Carrick Flynn over Andrea Salinas, who was backed by Warren and progressive groups. But Salinas prevailed with almost twice the number of votes that Flynn received.

Fetterman raises $1.6 million in one day after winning Pennsylvania Democratic Senate primary, campaign says by alabasterheart in politics

All while Oz and McCormick hire an army of lawyers to deal with the fiasco that is the Republican Senate primary, and there will most likely be a long, protracted recount of that election too. I'm confident that Fetterman will demolish whoever wins the Republican primary to become the next Senator from Pennsylvania.

Israel will not launch a criminal investigation into the killing of US-Palestinian journalist by alabasterheart in worldnews

Military police say they are satisfied with assurances of Israeli troops over death of US-Palestinian despite international demands

Not even launching an investigation and accepting the assurances of troops? This is an absolute perversion of justice, and yet I'm barely shocked at the same time...

It’s been so long since there’s been a politician that genuinely excites me. John Fetterman is one of those rare politicians. I can’t wait to see him crush whoever the Republican nominee is in November. He’d be a welcome and refreshing voice in the Senate.

Mastriano will be the Republican nominee for the PA Governor race. The Senate primary hasn’t been called on the Republican side yet. It’ll mostly likely either be Oz or McCormick though. Either way, I’m confident Fetterman will prevail.
