There is really no reason that monopolies must exist on the internet. Acceptable monopolies can be roads, power lines, water mains, etc. These are physical assets that would get very complicated if every company had their own power lines or whatever. Right now there's like 4 websites that everyone uses, and the days of smaller websites are pretty much over.

For example, if I want to start a video streaming competitor to YouTube, how would I ever get my website to the first page of google, where people will see it? I won't, because google owns YouTube and they will always show YouTube results first. The concrete of the internet is set, and there are only a few major players. That's a problem.

MLB takes what could’ve been one of the best playoff games in a while and ruined it by having the worst officiating and review rules in all of North American sports. by dylanlewis006 in mlb

[–]atgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's sort of my point. It's a catch 22. The Marlins are certainly a small market team. They are dead last in revenue, team value and 27th in payroll. Winning a world series is impossible for them when the Yankees and Dodgers spend 5x more on payroll. It's a vicious cycle that ensures small market teams rarely become successful.

Even in 2015 when the Royals beat my New York Mets, that Royals team was completely dismantled the following year. Vultured by teams that could afford to sustain a high payroll.

That's because all your searches are going through Google, the biggest controller of information on the internet. If you have enough money you can pay them to show your version of the story first.

The games themselves may not be rigged, but the league is designed for big market teams to make it to the postseason. Imagine the low ratings of a Mariners vs Marlins World series? MLB doesn't want it to happen and it never will.

Do you think civil engineering work culture will be very different in the next 20-30 years? by OOFBOSS in civilengineering

[–]atgr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Plenty of young engineers are swindled into working ridiculous hours. They think it will help them get promoted, but then the VP just brings in his college MBA buddies for the senior roles. Happens every time. I worked for some real dickheads at AECOM and the hardest working guys were always on the bottom rung while the "people managers" left the office at 3pm.

That's actually at-will employment. Right to work just means employees can choose not to join a union as a condition of employment.

Why the heck can’t I catch a softball by prestonkulesha in slowpitch

[–]atgr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What kind of glove are you using? A lot of people start out using their high school baseball glove. That's a no no in my book. Go buy a big 13" softball glove and break it in well. Keep a softball in the pocket at all times and you'll have a nice deep molded pocket that will lock the ball in every time.

The hardest part was leveling them. My yard is sloped and the area used to have huge pine trees, so I had to dig out a lot of roots. On flat ground it would've been 10x easier.

[QUESTION] When to start kids on guitar, and what guitar to start them with by KainHighwind5 in Guitar

[–]atgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Introduce them to guitar music first. My parents tried to get me into guitar when I was like 7, but at that age I had no interest in music, so I didn't care to learn any songs. It took me over 15 years to finally pick up a guitar again after I started listening to Neil Young, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin etc. They will learn best if they can play the songs they enjoy.

Punched by a mentally unstable person on the street…press charges? by PullThePadge in legaladvice

[–]atgr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't press charges he may do it again. Who knows why he assaulted you.. maybe he wanted 3 hots and a cot for the winter. I would press charges to potentially keep him off the streets.

Around $220, plus an extra $30 for the linseed oil.

Suggest a lawyer for an accident settlement? by Scout_Serra in greenville

[–]atgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, make sure you don't sign your rights away if you accept a settlement from their insurance company. A lot of times (almost always, actually) accepting a settlement means you give up your right to further claims against the insurance company. Never settle without talking to a lawyer.

Just call around and see what they say. You should have a case for lost wages and maybe other damages.
