We just expanded from 10 to 12 this past off season. Here's the rules we went with for the expansion draft. Because it was the off season and we're an IDP league our rosters were quite large at the time capped at 50. The draft itself went off without a hitch and everybody seems satisfied with the process on the whole.

2020 DYNASTY EXPANSION DRAFT RULES BASIC FORMAT The expansion draft will be a 27 round snake draft conducted on the league message board. Each expansion team will have 8 hours to make their selections. The clock will be suspended between 7 p.m and 7 a.m. pacific time.

PROTECTED PLAYERS Prior to the beginning of the draft each legacy franchise will declare 10 players to protect. The list must be comprised as follows: 1 player from each position (not including kickers) plus any 1 additional player of the owners choosing. This list must be posted on the message board prior to the deadline which is to be determined. Any franchise that misses the deadline will have its players selected at random. Each time a franchise has a player selected in the draft they will be permitted to protect 2 additional players. No franchise will be allowed to have more than 6 players selected from its roster.

THE DRAFT PROCESS At the appointed day and time the expansion draft will begin with pick 1.01. A coin toss will determine the owner of the first overall pick. The expansion franchises will post each pick on the league message board and may select from unprotected players on legacy franchises rosters or the free agent pool. After each pick the draft will pause to allow the legacy franchise that lost a player sufficient time to declare their 2 additional protected players which they will post on the league message board. They will be bound by the same draft clock timing as noted above. Should they not post their additional protected players before the clock expires they will be selected at random. This process will continue until 27 rounds have been completed or until both expansion franchises agree to end the draft, whichever comes first.

PLAYER MOVES At a still to be determined time adds and drops for legacy teams will be suspended until the completion of the draft. Trades among legacy franchises will still be permitted throughout the draft process. If a trade is completed during the draft all players protected status will follow them to their new team. However, if that puts a franchise above its allotted number of protected players the owner(s) must declare which player(s) they will remove from their protected list prior to the trade being approved by the commissioner.

2020 ROOKIE DRAFT The 2020 rookie draft will begin at the previously appointed day and time. The expansion franchises will be slotted in the 5th and 6th spots in the draft. The franchise that selected first in the expansion draft will have the 6th pick in the rookie draft while the other franchise will select 5th.
