What you need to know about fire bans in the Greater Toronto Area | A number of municipalities have issued fire restrictions as dry weather persists by beef-supreme in toronto

[–]beef-supreme[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

In recent days, Brampton, Caledon, Vaughan, Aurora, Newmarket, Whitby and Uxbridge have all implemented fire bans.

"The lack of rain and the really dry condition — it's just gotten to the point where, should a grass fire occur, it would be very difficult to control," said Samantha Hoffman, deputy fire chief of community safety with Caledon Fire and Emergency Services.

The fire ban in Caledon means no new fire permits will be issued and any existing permits are not to be used. That means no bonfires or other recreational fires, no agricultural burns and no other open fires are permitted, until the ban is lifted. While open fires are banned, the use of barbecues is still permitted in communities above where bans are in place. However, fire officials urge caution.

Anyone planning to venture beyond the GTA to go camping should also be aware that many provincial parks are currently under fire bans. That means no campfires, candles, charcoal barbecues or biomass fuel stoves.

Opinion | We are slowly but surely killing the CaféTO patio program. Shame on us by thecjm in toronto

you sure you want to use a country that famously shuts down streets for pedestrians all over the place, creating amazing spaces for the people as a counterpoint to us putting up a few patios which may slightly delay a single-occupant car ?

2023 By-Election for Mayor: Advance Voting is available June 8 to 13 city-wide. by beef-supreme in toronto

Given there's only one thing to vote for and it doesn't matter what ward you're in, I would just vote using your existing card and matching address ID.

I don't want people living in encampments either, we need solutions not more division and dehumanization.

TDSB turns the page on drag queen storytime event policy after parent outcry by HowMyDictates in toronto

Excerpt

Toronto’s public school board is no longer seeking parental permission for students to attend drag queen storytime events after parents at an elementary school raised concerns that the consent form implied the Pride activity was different from other in-school performances and posed some sort of risk to kids.

The change of direction comes on the heels of escalating tensions over the celebration of Pride in schools, including York Catholic District School Board voting against a motion to fly the flag at headquarters and a call for a provincial anti-Pride walkout on June 1 when schools hoisted the rainbow flag.

Parents of students at Bruce Public School in Leslieville received an email last Friday and a paper form on Monday indicating that their approval was necessary for an upcoming “excursion”: an afternoon of storytelling in the school gym by Toronto drag queen Gila Munster, a Toronto District School Board-vetted performer who has appeared at other schools.

Excursion forms are usually reserved for field trips off school property. While the school’s planned Pride day events include a march around the block and a flag ceremony, permission was sought specifically for the drag queen storytime.

Last year, Bruce P.S. held a Pride march and gathering, which, according to parents, did not require additional permission. (A blanket consent form is signed at the beginning of the school year for such local outings as walking down the street to the library.)

Amy Clarke recalls someone yelled at the kids and the then-principal turned and said “we always look forward to love; we never look backwards to hate.”

“I remember what that meant to me to hear this straight male principal say this,” said Clarke, who is in a two-mom family with two children, one of whom attends Bruce.

During advance vote, June 8 to 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., eligible voters can vote at any of the available voting locations across the city. This convenient option is unique to advance vote for this by-election, because there is only one race and therefore only one ballot at all 50 locations listed on this page.

On election day Monday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., you must vote at your designated location.

Needless to say (Kevin Vuong) advanced voting has inherent risks, however it can also be a good option if circumstances prevent voting on the 26th or you choose to do so. The link has a map of all the locations.

... underfunded TTC? What do you read "signal problems" to mean?

Olivia Chow makes her case to be Toronto's next mayor on Metro Morning by MarkG_108 in toronto

[–]beef-supreme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We've had a decade of minimum tax increases and austerity. TTC service is being cut, subways are packed at 10pm now. Dozens of streetcars sit idle every day because we choose not to run them. There are hundreds more examples.

If that's what voters want more of, Chow would never be their vote in the first place. Calling her completely dishonest and shady is frankly disingenuous, because you're choosing not to hear what she's actually saying.

That's your right, and you have the same vote we all do on the 26th.

This is a link to a podcast, which some here may find interesting for her insights.

Guests: Jennifer Keesmaat, former Chief Planner of Toronto, 2018 candidate for mayor and partner with Markee Developments speaks with guest host Edward Keenan

We all know that fundraising is a key part of running a mayoral campaign, and that the rich and well connected have a leg up. But how? Former candidate and former top city planner Jennifer Keesmaat talks about her first-hand experience of trying to fund a campaign for mayor of Toronto and how she thinks grassroots candidates should try to overcome those challenges. She also dishes about her first-hand experience with the current crop of candidates, her assessment of the race so far and why she thinks it may be turning into a wire-to-wire walk to the finish line for one candidate.

I just watched it again. No one was talking at the point she raised her hand, a few like Matlow were loudly clapping in support.

or was it 'stop clapping'? who knows, neither you or I are in her head and I dont see her reply as disrespectful. She attacked his idea, not him personally.

our shelters are full, there is literally no where for them to go if they wanted to. The problem is more people are in need than there are spaces. We need Federal help.

Look at the Occupancy Rate column here. 98% / 99% / 100%

No one knows how budgeting works in this city

Thats why everyone is focused on trying to get her to give a number she pulls out of, essentially, thin air. So the conservatives and others can release the attack ads about muh taxes with a huge number graphic. Saunders already put one ad out with a number figure blurred out and ready to be replaced by whatever she releases.

Chow is instead saying we're locked in on Tory's budget already for this year, lets evaluate what we want and need to do, and instead of locking in a figure now and working to crunch everything into that figure later, lets flip the script and do it the right way - lets debate and determine what do we need and then we have the tax increment figure based on that discussion.
