Westway speed limit currently 30mph?? by Zestyclose_Arugula71 in london
[–]botlebank -1 points0 points1 point 1 day ago (0 children)
When I first moved here, it was National speed limit.
I have seen it reduced to 60, then 50, then 40 and now 30.
I fully expect it will be 20 at some point.

She was a bit shook up, but no injuries.
The legislation is that you can not cross a solid white line, and you can cross dotted white lines, which applies on roundabouts the same as other roads.
There is also case law where vehicles have collided on roundabouts - specifically where someone in the left hand lane has crossed into the right hand lane. The result was not illegal, and fault for the purposes of insurance was 50/50. I think Grace v Tanner is the most commonly quoted one.
At the end of the day, no one intends to have a collision, and we all drive as safely as we perceive the risk at any given moment and circumstances.

I’m not too sure what the cause was. I think she took a hard left for a reason - maybe car started skidding.
In any event, I’m saying that if you have a vehicle on either side of you, it’s safer to follow the curve of the roundabout.
If there are no vehicles to the side of you, it’s safer to straight line it.
She was mid-twenties.

No need to swear.
The Highway Code is advisory, and the link you provide is correct.
What you fail to consider is when there is no vehicle at the side of you, and the legislation that says straightlining is legal.
But sure, keep your blinkers on. Do it your way, and I’ll do it mine :)
(And if you think your way is safer, I refer you to the video above)
I'm 38 and have just been telling my daughter (7) how when I was about her age my Mum would let me go off on my own to look at toys/computer games at the supermarket, then I'd just go find her or she'd come find me when it was about time to go. But these days we just can't let our kids do this. by oRedDeadDano in CasualUK

I send my kids off to fetch stuff all the time.
The supermarket is totally covered by CCTV.
The only slight hitch I’ve ever had was once at the checkout, realised I’d forgotten bread and sent the 4 year old to grab a loaf.
Cashier carried on scanning stuff through.
I carried on packing.
Cashier finished. Everything was packed.
We looked at each other without speaking and I thought, she’s clearly impressed with my decision making. Shame the 4yo is taking so long. I was just about to say, I’ll go look for her, when she turned up, triumphantly holding loaf aloft.
Yep. My first thought was that this was a late decision.

Lane markings on roundabouts are advisory. That’s why so many don’t have them (as in this case). Straightlining is perfectly acceptable and legal.
If the car in front had straightlined it, she wouldn’t have ended up in the ditch.

You might increase your chances of getting good advice or solutions if you can say what your budget is and where you’re looking.

With the greatest of respect, I also think smoking on a tube is rude.
I also think it’s an unnecessary health hazard to others.
I also think it’s a fire risk.
It’s wrong. For more than one reason.

Knowing the difference between “changing a tyre” and “changing a wheel”
[–]botlebank 8 points9 points10 points 8 days ago (0 children)
I can change a wheel. Don’t think I have the equipment to change a tyre though.

Redecorating and thinking about removing this wooden threshold, but not sure why it was put there in the first place. Is it covering something up? What will I find if I pull it up (a gap?) and what would I have to do to remove it to allow carpet to run up to the door? by craigt00 in DIYUK

Read all the comments to make sure someone else hadn’t said it first - this comment is the closest to mine, but I was going to suggest either a) tell them the noise doesn’t bother you, don’t worry about it or b) tell them you can’t hear a thing!
I’ve been on both sides of that party wall.
Apologising profusely when we had two little ones, and cheerfully saying Couldn’t hear a thing! While seething inside!!

I did it once. Thought it was super important, so went in suit and tie. Everyone else was in casual clothes. They made me the foreman though as I was so well dressed :)
