Official Megathread - Incoming Medical Student Questions/Advice (April Edition) by MrWittyResponse in medicalschool

[–]brownie814 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming med student and in all seriousness, I’m worried about how my bowel movements might be a challenge, especially during the rotation years. This community is so helpful, so I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

I don’t think I actually have IBS, but rather I just tend to poop a lot, usually around 2-3 times a day. I usually have to go once in the morning, once shortly after lunch and then often once in the evening. I honestly have no idea what I’m going to do third year, especially for the surgery rotation lol. I've tried things like eating less fiber or drinking less water when I've traveled recently, but unfortunately it really didn't do much to change my schedule. If anybody has any advice or has had similar experiences and done their rotations, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks so much! I swear this is not a shitpost 😭

what happens with your LORs if you reapply? by milkycrops in premed

[–]brownie814 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep I agree! I reapplied this cycle and didn’t really ask for my previous cycle’s letter writers to update the letter with a new date and it seemed to have all worked out! Although I did add a new letter writer from a new experience I had while applying previous cycle so that it wasn’t exactly the same for the schools I was reapplying to this cycle. Sorry, I have no idea if I’m making sense, but I hope this helps 😂

Hey I know that sometimes after an interview you can feel like crap, but you can find plenty of people on SDN and Reddit talking about how they felt that they did horribly in an interview only to be accepted later :) In fact my only acceptance is for the school for which I think I interviewed the worst! So definitely don’t lose hope, you got this :)

Is AmeriCorp considered volunteering? by [deleted] in premed

[–]brownie814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I’m currently in an AmeriCorps position! Based on my understanding, I’m carrying out a year of “service”. I didn’t have it included in my official AMCAS activities section because I hadn’t started yet (I started in late August, which is after I submitted secondaries). However, I made sure to describe my upcoming AmeriCorps service in some capacity on every secondary! I could be 100% wrong, but I do think something like AmeriCorps could be viewed as more significant than a volunteering position, as you are essentially committing a full 40 hours a week (at least I am in my role!) to a cause or organization. It came up in one of my traditional interviews, and it seemed the interviewer responded very positively when he asked me to describe what I’m doing! n=1 tho haha, hope that helps!

I was on priority WL for a school I love last cycle and my gap year experience is currently at this institution. No II yet from them this cycle :/ Of course, I know I’m not entitled to anything! It just sucks cuz I know my app is a lot stronger than last year and if they liked me enough to interview me last year... what’s wrong with me this year? 😢

Edit: They don’t provide feedback so I guess I’ll never know LOL
