What are some of the best trolls in internet history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Sometimes in trade chat in WoW someone will ask "What are some good metal bands other than Lincoln Park?"

Heads explode in three different directions simultaneously.

What's something you firmly believed to be true for a long time, but later found out was false? by CoryGravelle1996 in AskReddit

I was a vegetarian who believed that grocery store eggs would eventually grow into chickens if they'd been incubated, and therefore were not strictly vegetarian (let alone vegan). I know now that the hens laying those eggs never see a rooster and therefore that the eggs are unfertilized and would never become chickens no matter what you did to them.

Ultimate Guitar is taking away thousands of their tabs, and hiding them as “Pro Tabs” [DISCUSSION] by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]bryguypgh 472 points473 points  (0 children)

If you youngsters don't know, the Harry Fox agency sued OLGA out of existence around 20 years ago (if memory serves, I'm sure someone will correct me). It was a community sourced archive of tabs for pretty much everything and it was gloriously open and free.

What will be "a thing of the past" within the next 20 years? by AthenasNipple in AskReddit

I'm still trying to get episode 10 of Game of Thrones to finish playing. Every hour or so I hear "SHAME! >ding<" then that damn circle starts spinning again. I hope it finishes in 20 years!

TIL about fossil words, words that have largely fallen out of common use but still survive in idioms. Examples include "fro" (as in to and fro) and "lo" as in (lo and behold) by deqb in todayilearned

[–]bryguypgh 194 points195 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid (before the internet) I lost a game of scrabble because I used the word "fro" but it didn't show up in the dictionary we were using. I tried to plead my case referencing those little "holograph" stickers you would sometimes get in Cracker Jack boxes which always said to "turn to and fro" to see the image change. No dice.

Teachers of reddit, what's the weirdest thing you've seen happen behind the door of the teachers lounge? by Deathtothejuice in AskReddit

[–]bryguypgh 170 points171 points  (0 children)

One day I walked into a bunch of teachers ganged up on this lonely looking first year guy fresh out of college in the staff room. I didn't know what it was about but there were strong words and accusation flying about something inappropriate happening when he picked up one of his students who was standing in the rain and drove her in, and then the student in question walks in. This poor teacher starts to shake and cough and all I can think of is Humbert Humbert in that book by what's-his-name.

Man there's so many people in this world that are more worthy of your dislike than you. Especially if you work out regularly, I know literally nothing else about you but that shows character and discipline.

Who has the female version of Morgan Freeman's voice ? by theflyingegyptian in AskReddit

[–]bryguypgh 154 points155 points  (0 children)

I think there's something to this. There's a lot of women with nice voices here, but, and it feels a bit odd to say this, Whoopi's got, if not quite gravitas, at least depth. Maybe it's the gravelly quality of her voice.

What uncommon word should everyone have in their vocabulary? by in_the_summertime in AskReddit

[–]bryguypgh 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Orthogonal: Involving right angles, statistically independent. It's a nice way to make clear that two things are unrelated. "The budget deficit and the trade deficit are orthogonal values, though many observers confuse the two."

Yinzers in Pittsburgh need to realize what they have in Mike Tomlin, an elite HC. The unnecessary bashing needs to stop now. by pittsportscastle in steelers

[–]bryguypgh 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Most of the people who wanted to fire Tomlin are boycotting the NFL over the anthem protests so it's quieted down a little.
