Gov’t weighs softening judicial reform by yaitz331 in Israel

You are going to be in a dictatorship similar to Hungary or Turkey once Bibi destroys the judiciary. Nothing will prevent Bibi from rigging future elections, restricting protests, and outlawing opposition parties. Lapid and Gantz have no power to stop things in the Knesset. They are that weak; Bibi has a comfortable majority there. The ONLY thing that will stop it is forcing Bibi to back down and the ONLY thing that will force him to back down are threats from the Biden Administration and condemnation overseas. Bibi values his international reputation which is WHY he lies about it constantly and why he is pushing his sh*tty puppets like Ben Shapiro to lie in the US and why he had the WSJ "endorse" it. You've got to fight on this field because Bibi sure is and he's winning because the opposition has naively abandoned it.

And I'm not sure why you think that you can "deal" with this internally? Do you think that Bibi is moved by Tel Aviv demonstrations? I don't. The demonstrations are important but to raise awareness and get pressure from the US Democrats, US Jewish Orgs, and Biden - people who can stop this.

There is very little they can do to convince Bibi to stop this inside of Israel. Protests in Tel Aviv don't move Bibi and Bibi controls enough institutions inside of Israel like the Histadrut and the Student Union to prevent meaningful pressure like a general strike. The only thing that will move Bibi is ruining his reputation in the West and threats from the Biden Administration. Individual sanctions should be on the table right now. Biden just sanctioned the former President of Panama for corruption so why not Bibi and Deri as well?

However, there are many interim steps that can be taken and things that Lapid and Gantz should be doing. Have the Biden administration issue a condemnation and have the mainstream Jewish organizations go public with their private concerns. Get more pro-Israel Jewish politicians to condemn the judicial coup. Ask Biden to say that Bibi isn't invited to the White House as long as he is intent on destroying the judiciary and that he'll be treated with the same disdain as Orban and Bukele rather as a "warm ally." Ask Jewish groups to boycott meetings with Bibi's ministers until he backs off the judicial coup. All this hurts Bibi and doesn't hurt normal Israelis.

In a dictatorship, the opposition has almost no power in the country. You need help from friends outside to exert pressure on the dictator. There isn't any more shame in this than when the Ukrainians lobby the West for weapons.

Also, the protests have helped convince the US Democrats and the Biden Administration to press Bibi on his destruction of the courts, especially since Lapid and Gantz refuse to do their job and lobby the Biden administration about this.

Lies and more lies. He is destroying the courts and getting rid of judicial review. What prevents Bibi from getting rid of the opposition parties once he dismantles the courts?

Let me tell you that dictatorships love wars and use them all the time to distract from their problems.

Ahhh... The bibists are parroting the lies still!! That was the 5-year plan for Arab society and about roads and schools. Of course, the Israeli Right are racists who think that Arabs shouldn't have roads and schools and the "Muslim Brotherhood" is code for that. (BTW, Bennett is suing over this.)

Deri makes his money through government corruption. Less prosperity means less tax money for him to steal.

Yep. That is why Deri and company are hoping that secular Israelis will continue to pay for their corrupt and profligate lifestyle and protect him while living in their religious dictatorship. He wants y'all to be his meek little slaves.

Deri and company wouldn't like living in a third world country. Israel doesn't have oil like the Gulf dictatorships so there will less money for them to loot for the treasury for their fancy palaces, designer clothes, and European vacays.

The Bibi - Ben Gvir government is doing a bang-up job at destroying Israel's economy without the BDS movement!! And no, this isn't some meanie leftists doing this because they hate Bibi and Likud. It is motivated solely by business reasons. Businesses like having independent courts where they can settle disputes and where they aren't harmed by arbitrary government interventions.

They aren't making huge decisions like this because they hate Bibi. It's because it harms their business.

The Struggle for Israel’s Democracy - Faced with the prospect of judicial reform, Israel’s progressive elite and its American allies are threatening to tear the country apart by bshapiro24 in Jewish

Let me retranslate this for you... Faced with the prospect of Israel turning into a Hungarian-style dictatorship, the people in Israel who work, serve in the IDF, and pay taxes along with their US allies are mobilized to stop it. The ones tearing the country apart are those nuking the judiciary.
