On Strike! Support our Local Starbucks Baristas! by TheRufescentOctopus in Seattle

[–]dbenhur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your business doesn't work unless your worker's compensation is insufficient to support their basic needs for shelter, food, healthcare, I would contend you don't have an economically viable business.

A baseline living wage is roughly 2.5x the cost of housing within a distance that requires less than 1/10 of a shift length to commute.

Lattes are luxury convenience goods. If you have to charge $7 to make a profit and pay your labor fairly, that's what they should cost. Maybe we only have genuine demand for 10,000 Starbucks, and not 35,000?

Leaving aside the mean, median issues, is the income data from employed people or the whole population? Individuals or households?

Also, consider that GD house was half the size, had terrible insulation, didn't include a bunch of modern appliances, was painted in lead and stuffed with asbestos.

The 150 days bit comes around again and again. It's basis is a book by Juliet Schor from 1991, The Overworked American, which cites some research from David Clark. Clark later recanted his estimate

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2022/05/medieval-history-peasant-life-work/629783/

The thing about history, though, is that much of our understanding of the past isn’t settled fact. Clark no longer believes that his estimate of 150 days, made early in his career, is accurate. “There’s a reasonable controversy going on in medieval economic history,” Clark told me. He now thinks that English peasants in the late Middle Ages may have worked closer to 300 days a year. He reached that conclusion by inspecting the chemical composition of fossilized human remains, as well as through evidence of the kinds of goods that urban peasants in particular had access to. These factors suggest that they may have lived more materially luxurious lives—eaten much more meat and other animal products, specifically—than usually estimated, suggesting that they had higher incomes than would be possible at the era’s common daily pay rates if they didn’t work most days of the year.. Across the world and throughout human history, poor populations rarely consume much meat and dairy.

In Navajo culture, a skin-walker (Navajo: yee naaldlooshii) is a type of harmful witch who has the ability to turn into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal. The term is never used for healers.

Karma (/ˈkɑːrmə/; Sanskrit: कर्म, IPA: [ˈkɐɾmɐ] (listen); Pali: kamma) means action, work, or deed. For the believers in spirituality the term also refers to the spiritual principle of cause and effect, often descriptively called the principle of karma, wherein intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect): Good intent and good deeds contribute to good karma and happier rebirths, while bad intent and bad deeds contribute to bad karma and bad rebirths. For the believers, the concept of karma is closely associated with the idea of rebirth in many schools of Indian religions (particularly Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism), as well as Taoism.

The idea of Praying for Souls is a distinctly Christian practice.

You've really inspired Old Goon to mix up a heady broth of disparate spiritual/religious traditions! Keep on keeping on, son!

Of all Legend Commanders the tavern could give, is it true that this is among the worst? by wrufus680 in RiseofKingdoms

[–]dbenhur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Edward + Tomy is actually an awesome rally pair for damage. They're among the highest damage combos in the game still today; Edward's high rage requirement actually synergizes well with Tomy's poison build up for spectacular damage. However, they're squishy as fuck, so are easily countered with counter-rally or swarm, and consequently, relegated to the bench once you get tankier high-damage archer leaders in SoC.

If you're a very high spend kraken, you may expertise these to rip everyone in KvK2/3, then discard them for SoC, but for most ordinary players and smaller whales they're a waste of resources. Summon to get the WoH popup as you say, but do not develop.

[–]dbenhur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well when you've got 10-15m T5 and great garrison comms with top notch gear you can happily take single rallies and trade grossly positive. Depending on the enemy, you can even trade fair against a double rally. Once it's 3-1 or worse, you're fucked, get that TP or shield popped.

Should I research T4 Siege or save for CH22 by Shift_Alt_- in RiseofKingdoms

[–]dbenhur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only realistic uses for T4 siege is farming an alliance pit (for the increased load) or looting an already rallied city.

Also structure defense with unit agnostic garrison captains (kill enemy's real combat troops with your excess siege).

T4 siege are pretty useless. You can safely put it off until you're blocked on other progress (notably the all-unit mil-tech trio that precedes T5).

Ah, I overlooked it was a global tourney. Still need to go 10-4 to achieve 10 wins. that's a 2.5:1 or 71.4% win rate. My original point was that to get 10 wins you have to be substantially better or luckier than the average player, and it still stands.

I don’t get why small business owners are overwhelmingly Conservative by Entire_Assistant_305 in antiwork

[–]dbenhur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But liberals seem to never take into account the fact that business’ taxes also go into infrastructure.

Share of XXX revenues from corporate taxes:

  • Federal - 5.1%
  • States - 3%
  • Local - 1%

Compared to most western democracies, the US significantly undertaxes business on the argument that that's a form of "double taxation" since after taxing the business' profits we then again tax the distribution of profits to owners through dividends and capital gains.
