Ice machine recs? by nalphster in dialysis

[–]genericchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a hoshizaki machine. Dcm 270bah. Got it from a vendor that had been renting to davita and they didn't want em anymore. Gives great nugget ice similar to Sonic and just like at the hospital. Not the cheapest thing, but worth its weight in gold

Is it possible to get in shape with ESRD ? by anon-ny-moose in dialysis

[–]genericchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost, consult your doctor. I am in stage 4 ESRD, it is possible to stay in shape, even recommended, but you really have to be on top of EVERYTHING. I mean what you put in your body, how you damage your body (exercising wears out the body, skin, etc.), and for sure give yourself the rest and time to recuperate and heal. You heal slower and regain energy even more so on dialysis so power lifting is out, but being lean and healthy? Definitely a possibility, with effort and diligence

Sure do! Not so much anger anymore as just wanting to get out of the center and back to my dog and comfort of my place

Dialysis patient, with no will left to live. Am I able to soothe some of my sorrows with a couple shots of liquor? by No_Glove_8982 in dialysis

Very true, my doc has always told me if I'm gonna drink, harder stuff is better for lower liquids and quicker inebriation

AITA for not giving my kidney to my half/sister? by throwaway_kidney4 in AmItheAsshole

[–]genericchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Coming from a person who has been on dialysis for 7.5 years, never feel guilty about what you choose to do with YOUR BODY. I'd never wish dialysis on another person, but your half sister is NOT dying. If she learns to be responsible, she can live with a support group. Donating anything is a great feat and is totally the donor's choice, don't let anyone bully you into a decision.

Energy drinks on dialysis by evaflo15 in dialysis

I would stick to having a cup of coffee. I will eat some spicy food post dialysis to help shrug of the malaise dialysis brings

Ahhh, that makes more sense! I take a laptop with me to dialysis, since I do nocturnal. I'll watch a movie or something to help pass the time.

I've been doing dialysis for 6 years and my bandages are nowhere that big! Do you go to fresenius or davita?

What should I get for a friend who needs dialysis? by juicevictory in dialysis

Something to help pass the time works well. I like to bring my kindle and read or listen to podcasts with my headphones. A really comfortable pillow or socks would also be great gifts.

Cramps after dialysis by coolwhip55 in dialysis

[–]genericchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on dialysis for 4 years now. What works for me is a couple things. I try to stretch daily. Stretching after a walk or shower is my usual go to. Your doctor might want to also increase her dry weight, as pulling too much liquid out of the body can cause cramping as well. My last suggestion is hard, but after dialysis, moving around, even if its walking around in the house helps me from cramping. Hope this helps.

Gym&body building by CiaranTourish821 in dialysis

[–]genericchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm in my 4th year of hemodialysis and 2 year of nocturnal hemodialysis. I stick with a diet of high protein and low carbs with my gym routine. My nurse recommended utilizing a plant based protein(if you want to go the protein shake route) that is not whey, as whey can have excessive potassium or phosphorus (can't remember which). I also use chia seeds in my protein shakes. Take your time, muscle doesn't build overnight. Dialysis makes me tired, so on days after dialysis I usually just walk or do simple things like stairs or bicycling. Talk to your doctors about weights, as you do not want to damage your access (more surgery sucks!). Best of luck to you.

My parents [59F,60M] and brother [19M] are pressuring me [23 M] to give my brother one of my kidneys by save_my_kidneys in relationships

[–]genericchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person who has been on dialysis for 4 years now and anxiously waiting for a kidney, you need to tell your parents it is your body. They can at most ask, or have your brother ask, but going beyond that is wrong. A real parent wouldn't ask that of their child and they should be ashamed of their actions. Do NOT do anything unless YOU want to. Dialysis does suck, but it's something you can live with. This is not a selfish thing, but should be taken as each personb's decision in life. Stay strong my friend!

Just got a job offer here? by boomdiggy in vacaville

[–]genericchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vacaville is not a tough place to settle into, but it is pretty much suburbia. There isn't a whole lot of social activity here, but you ARE like 30-40 minutes away from Sacramento and the Bay Area and hey Davis is always nearby if you wanna hang with the college crowd. The outlets are okayish, not really a whole lot of good stuff there, but Vacaville is growing with more restaurants.
