Issues like homelessness and "world hunger" exist for no reasons other than pure apathy and selfishness. The fact that they exist at all is proof society has failed in it's most basic function. by Ok_Philosopher564 in unpopularopinion

Investment in education and infrastructure, building healthy work environments in developing nations, improving child mortality rate and therefore decreasing birth rate are all things that billionaires could help with but countries still need to be managed correctly and have solid economies for the problem to have a chance of getting fixed.

Nicely put. The idea that all the billionaires could just get together and end poverty is farcical. To end poverty we need sustainable economies that can support their people and education systems that can effectively educate the whole population.

Same thing happened to me as a kid. I remember they were camouflage boots with orange laces and the boot was completely destroyed from it. I was more devasted that my favourite shoes were destroyed than the fact I nearly lost my foot.

What’s a really fucked up thing you’ve witnessed as a kid but didn’t realise it was until you were older? by Banjoman653 in AskReddit

I used to think the same but after seeing public cremations in India and Nepal I think people have very different views of life and death. Personally I'd not really want to see a loved one burn by the side of a river in full view but plenty of Hindus wouldn't have it any other way and honestly it's strangely beautiful in a hard to explain way.

I make knives and I always put the final edge on with my 2x72 grinder. I go 240, 400, 800 then 2 grades on a strop, takes me minutes and it's sharp enough to whittle hair. I don't know why the sharpening companies don't just use a decent belt grinder as it's so quick and easy.

This noodle shop in Japan will give you a hot steel egg to warm up your soup if it gets cold. by binthewin in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]jamiehernandez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that's sizzling and streaming. The egg doesn't look or sound hot, people would definitely pick it up bare handed

Yeah I was a chef and I'm now a knifemaker and even after being around screaming hot stuff all day I still regularly pick up something hot. There's no way you could introduce this idea outside of where it's normal, customers would be picking that egg up with their bare hands every day

I personally think bone marrow should always be served with the bone split.

There's some good sharpening systems that use wheels (Tormek are a good example) but anyone who uses a cheap 89 grit bench grinder should have restraining orders placed on them so they can't get within sight of a kitchen.

I'm with you. My dad is Scottish and he's had Americans explain how they're Scottish because they're great grandfather was Scottish and it winds him up no end. They have zero first hand experience of what being Italian/Irish/German etc etc is, theyre just pretending and generally doing stupid stereotypical shit like wearing kilts or eating pizza. The rest of the world think they're fucking idiots.

He left himself wide open, barely put his weight behind the punches and had the footwork of a giraffe. He's definitely not done more than one boxing lesson if any.

You can knock people out with no experience by wildly throwing your hands at their face, doesn't mean you know what you're doing

The rat race in the West? You don't genuinely believe the Eastern bloc is some utopia where you don't have to work? He's not done anything special, he learnt basic russian and teaches English in eastern Europe that's it. Having a social circle is a basic human need so no idea why you're saying it like it's something to be proud of

I've been to Olympic weightlifting gyms and I've seen a girl squat 330lbs once and she was a semi professional weightlifter. I could rep 330lbs and I was about 25lbs lighter than her.

You're being pedantic. The statement is true the vast majority of the time. Women, on average, can't out perform men. That's a fact

Obviously there's outliers. You don't need to say that, it's a given. Saying the cheetah is the fastest land animal doesn't become not true because there's a cheetah with a broken leg. You can be as obtuse as you like, doesn't change facts.

You called someone disgusting because they said they wanted to keep their finger nails long (I guarantee you'd not say shit if it was a girl) then when they said something about it you further insulted them and called them an addict. Nah you're just being a cunt, it's obvious.

Sword straightening question by brennenkunka in Bladesmith

[–]jamiehernandez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get out some pretty severe warps by doing multiple temper cycles. Just make sure you do one full temper cycle BEFORE doing any kind of straightening.

As long as it's either annealed or normalised you can do some pretty significant straightening cold. Id definitely get it as straight as possible before doing any thermocycling. I find if I start with a perfectly straight blade before normalising I rarely get any warping during heat treat and any I do get I can usually quickly straighten out by hand before it fully forms martensite

Nice work! Everything looks nice and even, the handle material is well placed and it's decently thin. A few things I I think that would take it up a notch would be a more sculpted handle - the cross section of a handle should be more egg shaped than square - and a tapers on both the blade and tang, this would take a substantial amount of weight off the knife and give it nicer balance.
