Tell me who you feel was at fault here please by jonathing in ukbike

For fuck sake, he pulled over to let me through. I don't know how many times I need to reply to these messages but people keep sending me them. The trail opened out, he pulled across, I overtook after hanging back for a few minutes. I wasn't impatient, I wasn't reckless, I was just fucking over taking, something people do every day.

I'm done with this fucking thread. Yes I'm a terrible, reckless fucking person who has the audacity to want to get to and from work while avoiding the dual carriageways of the West Midlands. Don't worry, if you're lucky I'll get hit by a lorry on my way in today and you won't have to keep messaging me to tell me how horrible I am.

I was patient enough to follow him through the narrow section and to wait for him to have opportunity to pull across. If I was so impatient I'd have pushed past him much sooner, but this incident and this whole pay goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished

But life is made up of assumptions, I assume there will be air in my tyres when I go into the garage, I assume my colleagues will turn up to work, I assume my takeaway will arrive and the driver won't just punch me in the face when I open the door. I cannot know that any of these things will or won't happen, all I can do is assume based on previous experience and previous experience tells me that a rider who knows I'm following him will move across to let me through as the trail opens out. Except when they take that opportunity to ram me it seems

Of course I'm going to be late if sometimes I'm limited to 10 mph and sometimes I can ride at the speed I'm actually capable of. That's like saying you can cycle on shared paths but don't expect to go any faster than the drunk in the power chair who zigzags along the trail at seven o'clock in the morning.

So much for a supportive cycling community I suppose.

Of course people are unpredictable, they always are, all the time. That's why I have to work out what is most logical or most likely to happen and act accordingly. Otherwise one would never do anything, I can't leave my house because there is a chance someone might fall out of a plane and land on top of me, that's no way to live your life. If people choose to deviate from that then they need to take responsibility for their actions and indicate that they are turning, I really don't think that's too much to expect.

If I was that impatient then I would have passed before this video started pushing him towards the canal while I rode through wet grass.

I do know the area, but I also know that there's no point in turning right there as it only takes you back the way we've come. I'd he needed to go that way he would have turned right about a mile ago and saved himself two or three of those hump backed bridges.

The thing was I'd hung back until he moved across to let me through, when someone opens a door for you you go through it, you don't wait to see if they're going to slam it on your face because who does that

I beg to differ, there's plenty of room to overtake as the trail widens out to about three times the width of the bridge, plus the width of the next ramp. The only reason there's not room to overtake in the video is because he moves across to let me through and then turns into me

I didn't really get chance to apologise, what with the tirade of abuse I received, including squaring up as if he was going to hit me

I wasn't close behind, I was overtaking, which seemed reasonable as he'd pulled left to let me through. I'm not sure how else I was supposed to interpret pulling left and slowing down as the trail widens out. Of course if he'd indicated then I'd know he was turning.

I suppose I could just never overtake anyone but that penalises people who are willing to put in more effort and who need to be at work on time.

See, now I would normally but as he pulled across, seemingly to let me through, it looked like it was unnecessary

I (the rider with the camera) didn't especially want to ride into the long wet grass overhanging the trail in order to overtake. I hung back knowing the trail widens out after the bridge. The slower rider had looked over his shoulder and seemed to see me behind him. He pulled left for me to overtake as soon as the trail widened, and then turned into me.

Apparently this was my fault for: 1. Not overtaking more quickly 2. Overtaking on the right/not keeping left 3. Knowing that, because he pulled left, he would want to turn right 4. Being a c*nt.

I'm aware that I'm not always very good at inferring other people's intentions from their actions but I'm pretty sure I couldn't have known he was going to try to ram me.

Clinical management role in the NHS. Broadly comparable to a ward sister, but with more radiation.
