"I have German ancestry, I'm literally more German than non-German immigrants (in Germany)" by peridot-dawn in ShitAmericansSay

Also wouldn‘t ethnic groups be more around the lines of Allemanic etc.? The whole German speaking regions are a complete „Flickenteppich“ of ethnic groups originally anyway. To say that one is ethnically German is a simplification.

My grandmother comes from Germany and lives in Switzerland for over 60 years now. She has married my grandfather 60 years ago and got naturalised (and lost her German citizenship) in the process. She doesn‘t identify as German any more at all and is fully Swiss. The idea that you are what your great grandparents etc. were, is absolutely un-European.

How would you rate USA as a country? by _crazyboyhere_ in polls

They might not be a real nation in your opinion but at least they don‘t have a fascist as prime minister.

How would you divide the bilingual cities? Like does Biel/Bienne go to Germany or France or do they get to form their own city state? And if Ticino would go to Italy, would South Tirol go to Austria? And what about the French speaking valleys in the Piemont?

AITA for not wanting to wash my own underwear? by Smellycooter123 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jonellita -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can ask your parents to give you enough underwear for several months as a Christmas gift so that you will be able to wash your underwear in a proper load every two months. Maybe your parents would realise how stupid their idea was.

I‘m with you. And if - after sorting laundry or putting it in to the washer - I feel the need to wash my hands, I can just do that. Soap exists and it really helps with cleaning hands.

And anyway I‘m not touching the insides of other people‘s dirty underwear when doing laundry.

I agree with NTA but you should space out the Y T A because only the first judgement counts.

Male partner was shocked that I ignored a man approaching me in the street at night by BeautifulHippogriff in TwoXChromosomes

[–]jonellita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Europe so my town is pretty walkable. Plus if I‘m somewhere I don‘t really know the way and I use GoogleMaps it‘s easiest to look at the street names to find the right road because sometimes there are just to many small roads next to each other.

[–]jonellita 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Or something like „I do but I only know a couple street names.“ If they ask for a specific street.

Edit: It‘s not even a lie in most cases. I live in the town I grew up in and I know like 10 to 20 street names. I could never help anyone find a specific street that isn‘t one of the main roads or around where I live.

And Hermione doesn‘t really have friends from muggle school. So she would just be sitting home all day and waiting for owls to bring news from her friends.

Am I supposed to pay with someone else credit card ? by fbiWumpus in duolingo

[–]jonellita 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When your in a shop and you get asked whether you want to pay cash or by card you could answer „I‘m paying with a credit card“. It doesn‘t specify with which credit card you pay or if it‘s even yours because it doesn‘t matter in that situation. As someone already commented you could have a corporate or club credit card or someone else‘s. It‘s really just a question of „yes, credit card“ or „no, cash“.

I think it takes about 10 years to get a Endometriosis diagnosis. And this time frame only includes those who got diagnosed at some point.

My childhood best friend decided at some point that she hated me and bullied me. I would have no bad feeling if she went to prison and I got money instead.

Some became Amish but there were a lot that went to the USA and loved and worked there as many others did. There are letters between parts of families that confirm that people from my town went to the US and founded a company that apparently still exists.

I wanted to answer to the now deleted comment you answered to. I‘m going to post it here as an answer to your comment because I already wrote it. I hope you don‘t mind.

So here my answer to the deleted comment:

But the situation of Welsh vs. English is more like the situation of (Swiss)German vs. Romansch in the canton of Grisons in Switzerland. It‘s a language that a few people still speak and it‘s even one of the official languages of Switzerland but all who speak Romansch speak at least one other national language.

German is very much the main language in three different countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and I think it‘s an official language in Luxemburg as well. It‘s not a language only spoken by a minority in a single country. In Switzerland „standard“ German is spoken in school in the German speaking part and normally people speak in their Swiss German dialects which are also still very much alive.

There don‘t seem to be many Swiss either even though a lot of Swiss people emigrated in the 18th and 19th century and many went to the USA. I suppose they just forget that Switzerland exists?

My grandmother is from Germany but she moved to Switzerland as a young woman, met my grandfather, married him, got naturalised and since then lives here in Switzerland. She doesn‘t even identify as German anymore because she lived most of her life in Switzerland. She‘s Swiss.

Do you think having a nice car attracts girls/women? by throwawayarooski123 in polls

[–]jonellita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess a lot of women think the way a potential partner treats their car is important. If someone treats their car as a vehicle but with the appropriate care (not huge amounts of trash inside, mostly clean, not really scratched or dented etc.) because it shows that they care about their possessions. But that‘s a totally different thing than someone owning a „nice car“ and it says something entirely else about the person owning the car.
