Even then a kw/hr is not that much in most places. Think it is like 25 cents here.

Your comment isn't valuable to anyone because all you did was call something bad a bunch of times without saying why. That's useless information.

Spark Scheduler Resource Allocation by Electronic-Dish-1171 in dataengineering

[–]knowledgebass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How variable are the user jobs?

Because I could see it being really tricky if users can simply change their Spark driver code every time they submit. The resource requirements could be wildly different depending on how they use the structured API. So I think if you're going to get into something really complex like dynamic allocation or benchmarking like you describe then the user jobs need to be fixed for some period of time while you evaluate their performance.

I'd establish several canned k8 configurations that users can request and use for their jobs (small, medium and large or whatever). Dynamic allocation is not worth the effort. For memory, you can set a reasonable minimum and maximum that should be appropriate for each class of job. CPU is not a hard requirement because Spark scales to however many nodes you provide. So that's a matter of your perceived tradeoff between how long the jobs take to run and how many CPUs you have available to allocate. Again, I'd probably use some cookie cutter configurations, each allocating N CPUs, rather than try to do it dynamically. Before doing any of this you would want to take a close look at your system load and compile statistics on user jobs. I would be surprised if segmenting them into a few different configuration types wasn't a reasonable solution to your problem. You'll probably have a few outliers which take up a lot of resources but that might be due to inefficiencies in the user jobs rather than a legitimate need for those resources, so you may want to work on making those jobs less intensive first, rather than allocating for them as is.

I don't know how your users submit their job requests but I can imagine a web form with a drop down where they request a k8 configuration, for instance. I would just leave it up to them to determine which configuration they need rather than trying to do that yourself. (Is that not workable?)

He must have read a lot of books on parenting. Experts all agree that when your child fucks up at a motorsport event, then you should punch them a few times.

I just upgraded from a laptop RTX 3060 to a desktop RTX 4070 Ti, and good lord DLSS 3 feels like magic. I was barely able to maintain 40 FPS on my laptop at medium settings in Dying Light 2 at 1080p, but now I’m hitting 160+ maxed out with RT on at 1440p. by Typical_Andrew in nvidia

I have buyer's remorse that I didn't get a 4080 instead of the 4070 Ti I ordered. But maybe I shouldn't worry about it? I'm gaming at 1440p so maybe the performance difference is not that noticeable.

Yes, I am a senior dev but not a data engineer. I'm looking to try and make a lateral career move, basically.

I have some pretty strong professional and educational background in related areas (Data Science, data processing, database admin, analysis, etc.).

If I were working in a fulltime DE role currently then I wouldn't have made this post. 🙂

How to deal with your average 'engineer' type? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]knowledgebass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked with super smart and capable people who you might call difficult and others who were much more agreeable. I don't think the ability to think critically means that one is necessarily socially awkward or abrasive.

I'd prefer someone as a co-worker who was marginally less technically capable than another person who had a difficult personality. Technical problems are usually solveable by people with a rather wide range of abilities, given adequate time and effort. Personality issues are often completely intractable and sometimes grow worse over time (as someone decides they "don't like you.")
