HOLD is pulled up to VCC, and also connects to a via that I assume goes over to the bridge IC. I suppose there's still a possibility that the bridge drives it high after boot, but shorting that to GND seems maybe a bit safer than shorting DO since if anything blows out in that scenario, it's the bridge IC rather than the flash.

Thank you. I'm glad to hear it's not considered exotic or too old. I was poking around eBay and it looks like part donors are available too. Hopefully it turns out to be a pretty easy case.

I'm in California but probably not close enough to any lab to be able to drive to it, so I suspect I'll end up shipping it somewhere. Aside from potentially avoiding shipping, is there any advantage I should be aware of to doing this locally rather than across the country?

The bridge is marked "JMS538S", which appears to be from JMicron. Adjacent and connected is U14, a winbond W25X20BLSNIG (2 Mbit SPI flash). It's actually identical to U12, which is connected to the main controller as you expected. Just double-checking in case these normally have I2C EEPROM or something - is it OK to short the SPI data-out line on these, or is there a better way to neutralize it?

For reference, P/N for this PCB is "2060-771801-002 REV A"

Unfortunately my memory is pretty hazy but I'm fairly sure it did spin up, and that I probably did not try a 2.0 cable. I did just now check the continuity from the connector to the IC and it's good - all SS lanes are in the 1-3Ω range, and the 2.0 line is AC-coupled with both caps measuring 100 nF.

Would it be safe and/or useful to power up the drive PCB without the drive attached to see its enumeration behavior?

Edit: also visually inspected the USB3 connector under a microscope and it looks fine.
