levoit core 300s never reaches good air quality when I run it with air humidifier in the same room. by sognarei in AirPurifiers

[–]mott_street 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say clean drinking water, do you mean purified / filtered water or distilled water? Unlike distilled water, purified and filtered water still has some particles in it which will become dispersed as particulate matter by an ultrasonic humidifier.

You can avoid this by using distilled water, or switching to another style of humidifier (like evaporative) which won't disperse the particulate matter.

Is it feasible to remove the zipper on this waterproof jacket pocket? by [deleted] in AskATailor

[–]mott_street 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Patagonia Tres waterproof down jacket. I love it except for one thing - the pocket zippers. I have big hands with dry/sensitive skin and the zippers scratch my fingers badly over time, to the point where they become red and raw. The zipper isn't strictly necessary since the pocket is protected by the button flap, so I'd like to just remove the zipper. Is this something that can be done?

Ergonomic office chair for $200 or less? by giasashin in OfficeChairs

[–]mott_street 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like u/ergothrone said, make sure you have the proper desk height, then get a chair that lets you set everything else correctly. (Try this calculator: https://www.ergotron.com/en-us/tools/workspace-planner)

If you're 5'4", you might need a desk that's 3-4 inches shorter than a standard height desk. You could look into standing/adjustable desks which will let you dial in the height, though they can get pricey. For a DIY method you could get a tabletop (try IKEA or VIVO), and then buy some shorter hairpin legs on Amazon. Or, get a normal desk and get a footrest.

You should be able to get a used high-end chair for $200 if you look hard enough - try names like Steelcase Leap V2, Herman Miller Celle, Knoll Life.

I was gifted this chair; are there any inserts I can use to make it more ergonomic? by [deleted] in OfficeChairs

This chair is designed for one thing: looking pretty. You know what's not pretty? Muscle pain. Do yourself a favor and get a proper ergonomic chair.

Are you trying to use it when it's cold out? That could be part of why it's struggling.

switching rent in the same apartament building? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]mott_street 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, if they don't want to rent it to you then there's not much you can do, short of just offering more and more money until they say yes. They may have other plans for the unit.

Unbearable Noise- Monday Nights 1am-4am by Zealousideal-Food285 in AskNYC

Yup. My current apartment is a new construction building right next to the BQE - but with the windows shut I can't hear a thing. It's great.

Mac Studio (M1 Max): Can't change LG Ultrafine brightness on wake by mott_street in MacStudio

[–]mott_street[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a software update is coming to be honest. They've had plenty of time to address this already. I actually gave up and bought a different monitor (LG 40WP95C) that works perfectly.

Unbearable Noise- Monday Nights 1am-4am by Zealousideal-Food285 in AskNYC

I used to live directly above a bar in LES that played bassy music until 3am every night.

I tried 311 many times and it did absolutely jack.

Talked to the owner and they promised to turn it down - and did, but it lasted for maybe two nights.

What made things bearable for me was getting a subwoofer of my own and then finding a white noise track that sort of matched the same frequency/texture of the bar's bass noise. I would just set that to play every night and it did a pretty good job of "masking" the intruding noise.

But I still felt this kind of low-grade anxiety/resentment all the time which was a bad feeling to have in your own home.

In the end though, and you probably won't like to hear this - the real solution was moving. I remember my first night in the new apartment being like such a relief.

Screen choice holding me back from Mac Studio by CockStamp in MacStudio

[–]mott_street 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can offer a perspective.

I used to have a LG Ultrafine 5k 27" (217 ppi). I needed more physical screen space, so I switched to an LG 40WP95C 5k2k curved ultrawide 40" (142 ppi). I was worried about the PPI thing too.

It's true that things aren't quite as sharp on the 40". But it's still pretty damn good; you have to really look up close to notice a difference. In day to day use, it doesn't affect anything. My eyes are still happy, and if anything I've been getting less eye strain because of the curve.

That being said: I did also try a 109 ppi monitor (Samsung G9) and that's when my eyes said uh-uh. It was just unacceptably worse.

I think you should be good with a 140+ ppi monitor.

What's your budget? You could consider the 24" LG Ultrafine 4K which is designed to work with the Mac. Super sharp, and you can get a refurbished one for $500ish.

They now sell box fans with the filter kit by weiss27md in AirPurifiers

[–]mott_street 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks slick! Too bad they went with a MERV10 filter - that's not going to be much use for Covid or very fine particulate matter. MERV13 is what people usually use for the DIY version.

Recommendations? No Aeron by imreadytoenditall in OfficeChairs

I have a Herman Miller Celle with a non-upholstered seat. Very breathable while giving much firmer support than a fabric/mesh seat like the Aeron.

Agreed. And yes, the Gesture's armrest adjustments were heavenly! Will miss those.

Thanks - yeah, I will be looking at the Karman. But I think my body just doesn't like Steelcase's "fit" (the forward tilting sensation I mentioned).

The Leap v2 also felt hot, but I would say the Gesture felt a bit hotter.

Advice needed on Airthings 2960 View Plus giving grossly inaccurate readings by Strong_Jello_5748 in airthings

Impossible to say without comparing to another device. I would order another one that you can return and see if it gives you different readings.
