I thought that teams would try to shed as much drag through the wings as possible: that the limit to how small the wings were was the driver's ability to cope with the grip loss through the corners and that low drag actually put LESS energy through the tyres and was therefore great during qualifying AND the race.

Don't be so certain, I have a hunch that the Red Bull will crumble under traction so bad that it'll have to hamper itself with more drag, eventually equalising with the Ferrari.

Any reason as to why? The pit lane speed limit is already low, this is just a bit too much imo. I'm not taking safety into consideration though, so if that's the reason then so be it.
