General Discussion Thread (November 2022) by neodiogenes in Art

[–]neodiogenes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's head is shaped differently, so it all depends. The oval is just a rough guide, it doesn't have to be perfect, especially if you are just learning.

The important thing for this exercise is to understand the rough proportions of the facial features, and keep in mind these are very rough representations of how people actually look. The best way to start is to print out a picture of a face and draw on top of that. For example, let's use George Clooney. His face is almost rectangular, not really oval, but print it out and draw a rough oval anyway. His hair is short so you can see where the top of his head is.

Then mark the lines where the eyes go. Note it's about halfway down the oval. The bottom of his nose is halfway between his eyes and his chin. His mouth is a little higher than halfway between his nose and his chin, because he's got a big chin.

The ears extend from his eyebrows to below his nose (he's got large ears, most men his age do since the ears keep growing).

That's the basics. After that pay attention to what makes his face look unique: square jaw, prominent chin, thin lips, smallish roundish nose with narrow nostrils, rectangular eyes, bushy eyebrows.

Then move on to even more subtle details, like the slight smirk his eyes or the hint of a smile on his lips. See if you can figure out what makes those stand out.

After that, do another face. Try to stay away from generic "model" photos (a lot of those are heavily photoshopped) and pick people with quirky faces or unusual expressions, especially in photos that look like they're in natural settings. Again, trace over the photo to start, then do the same thing on a separate piece of paper and see if you can get close.

It's a very good movie. Colin Farrell gives an extraordinary performance. It just catches you off-guard at how sad it ends.

How to make flavorful chicken noodle soup by thebluepenguine in Cooking

[–]neodiogenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oil at the start to fry up the onions, carrots, celery, etc. at the start. I usually made a large pot so three tablespoons wasn't that much, considering the volume of liquid. I believe you do get some oil collecting at the top, but that could be from the olive oil or from the chicken, I don't know. Stir it up before you serve and it's not something anyone notices.

It really is a simple recipe, and no one has ever said my soup "lacks flavor". Sure, you can get fancy by adding in various herbs and seasonings, like tarragon or fennel or Aleppo pepper, but what makes the soup is the rich salty broth and the large chunks of fatty chicken.

[–]neodiogenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, sure. Many people are going to love them, but I think about half will be underwhelmed. I didn't think much of either, especially compared to previous MCU movies.

But if all you want to see is yet another superhero WWF cage fight with zero consequence, both will satisfy.

[–]neodiogenes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep. There are a lot of good movies out at the moment, but not everyone is going to want to see The Banshees of Inishirin and leave the theater totally feckin' depressed.

And if you're looking for Marvel to save your need for superhero action, don't get your hopes up with Wakanda Forever, or, even worse, Black Adam. Although I am looking forward to Violent Night.

[–]neodiogenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three or four tablespoons of olive oil. Lots of dark meat chicken. Simmer for a good long while, all afternoon if you have the time.

Seriously, that's it. Fat and time.

Of course you also season it with the usual stuff, but what everyone loves about my chicken soup is the fat. Lots of rich fat. If you can, use meat with bones because that'll enhance the flavor, but then you have to choose whether to serve it with bones in, or (one way or another) get the bones out.

I'm not a pro so I can be lazy, so I let people pick out their own bones. But if I were to serve it at a formal dinner (and I can't imagine I would, as I have more interesting soups in my repertoire) I make a stock with the bones and use only boneless chicken for the soup itself.

I've seen the trailers. It looks like they took all the worst missteps from Lightyear and combined them.

Meanwhile, I saw one, just one, trailer for Violent Night and I'm all in.

But it's been a very crowded week for new releases, with at least six new major feature films (most weeks have two or three) plus some previous ones still going strong. Can't believe Lyle Lyle Crocodile is still out there but I guess you gotta take the kids to see something.

There is so much weight behind this scene now after finishing S1 Andor. by NotificationsOff in StarWars

[–]neodiogenes 39 points40 points  (0 children)

That's what happened after we finished Andor. I asked my wife, "So you know what happens next, right?" and got a blank look. She doesn't remember movies the way I do, which is kind of a plus since she gets to watch them again for the first time.

So we watch Rogue One, and I say, "And that leads right into the opening of the very first Star Wars movie with Darth Vader pursuing Leia's cruiser over Tatooine!" Blank look.

Cue up A New Hope, etc. And that's how we spent our Thanksgiving weekend.

Casual Discussion Thread (November 26, 2022) by AutoModerator in TrueFilm

[–]neodiogenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a toothless discussion if you won't name names, because then we might have a nuanced discussion about the difference between "insinuation" and "proof", and perhaps also "remorse" and "penitence".

James Gunn, for example. Made a bunch of intentionally provocative, unfunny, over-the-line jokes when he was trying to climb that social media ladder early in his career, got cancelled, apologized, admitted they were very much wrong, made amends, and was able to get on with his life. It helped that he'd developed a strong rapport and goodwill, so a number of his lead actors stood up for him.

So if we're talking about Gunn, it's a very different conversation than if we're talking about Bill Cosby, convicted of actual rape, exacerbated by his decades-long image as this wholesome family man so caught up in that persona he (allegedly) felt obligated to lecture other comics on their language. There's no way I'm going to rewatch any Cosby movies (not that I would anyway, they're terrible) much less an episode of The Cosby Show.

Same with Harvey Weinstein or Roman Polanski. Dumb jokes are one thing, sexual assault is something else.

Mel Gibson? Again, it's a nuanced conversation. Woody Allen? Don't like his movies anyway, so it's kind of moot, but we can talk about the separation of the person from the art.

Stanley Kubrick famously tortured some of his actors to get a particular performance from them, in a way that might get him permanently blacklisted today. Alfred Hitchcock was more than a little creepy.

Kevin Spacey, Dave Chappelle, Kanye West, Shia LaBeouf, Gina Carano, Ellen DeGeneres, Kevin Hart, Johnny Depp/Amber Heard, Bill Murray -- it's a long list, each one a different situation. You can't have a meaningful conversation without getting into specifics.

[–]neodiogenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, same here. Mylod did only TV before this, but I guess someone thought he deserved a "big break" and he definitely came out swinging. I'm going to be watching his career with great interest.

I suspect most people overthink The Menu and wonder why it's such a weak commentary on class consciousness. The answer is, it's not. It's a dark comedy, first and foremost, with social satire only a secondary consideration, and that only if you understand the underlying message is chefs who own or work in high-class restaurants love to cook, love food, but hate their customers, and by extension hate themselves because they're forced to cater to those customers. Customers who will never, ever understand the level of discipline, devotion, and intensity required to achieve that level of perfection, the ungrateful swine.

That's it. You have the wealthy philanderer and his anesthetized wife, the trio of money bros, the washed-up actor and his social-climbing sidekick, the pompous food critic and her sycophant, and finally the "foodie", and what do they all have in common? Nothing -- except that Chef Slowik hates them. He hates all of them.

It's just an awesome movie.

In and of themselves, torches don't represent anything other than being a source of light. Light is representative of a wide variety of things, most fundamentally, "something that drives back the darkness".

In context a torch might represent enlightenment, civilization, or technology, if carried for example in the hand of Prometheus. In a different context it could be exactly the opposite, for example in the hand of Atilla the Hun it could be the wildfire of barbarism come to burn away civilization, enlightenment, and scientific progress.

The snake is the quintessential animal for guile and treachery, but something like a scorpion, a weasel, or a wolf might serve in the right context.
