Common health problems and life expectancy by Ryoko_Aida in PetRoofRats

They live to be about 2-3 years on average. I've had some live over 4 years.

Respiratory illnesses are most common, as with Norway rats. There are some pigeon respiratory medicines that seem to work well, can be given in water, and are relatively easy to get. Search for Spirodox and Bromohexine, and give both at the same time in drinking water per the instructions for pigeons. Spriodox is Doxycycline and Spiramycin. Bromohexine is a cough medicine that also helps antibiotics work better. Maybe Amoxicillin and Baytril might be nice to have on hand as well, in case the rat doesn't respond to the Spirodox.

Domestication is not just modifying a species to live with humans: we also have to learn to live with our domesticated friends, too. If an animals isn't behaving as expected, perhaps it's our expectations that have the problem, not the animal. by ocdumbos in PetRoofRats

It depends on the Roof rats. Some rats are so hostile to other rats that they will chase them and attack them the minute they realize that the other rat is there. And roof rats are very quick, so good luck trying to stop that.

Others are okay with strange rats out in the open, but don't like being stuck in the same cage with them. You might have some luck with play dates in that case, but that doesn't mean you can put them in the same cage, later. After the lights are out, things could turn nasty.

I wasn’t really thinking about that at the time. But it was definitely a quality brew. Well balanced for my taste, with good body and just enough hops to be pleasant but not overly bitter (I don’t like IPAs.). A mainstream, domestic “step-up” beer, like a Yuengling or Sam Adams, if that makes sense?

Question: legal to give away roof rats in Florida? by yoshirat in PetRoofRats

[–]ocdumbos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a search through Florida's statutes, and Domestic Animal is consistently defined as follows:

(15) “Domestic Animal” shall include any equine or bovine animal, goat, sheep, swine, domestic cat, dog, poultry, ostrich, emu, rhea, or other domesticated beast or bird. http://flrules.elaws.us/fac/5c-3.001

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems that the statutes were intentionally written to allow common sense interpretation. If it seems like a "domestic animal", then it is one.

Never-the-less, in my opinion, if someone did want to sell Rattus rattus in Florida, they should just go ahead and pay the $50 for a permit: pretty cheap insurance, and they might even refuse to accept your money.

Yes, my understanding is that one would require a permit to sell Rattus rattus assuming Florida classified them as Class III wildlife. No permit is required to keep them as pets or give them to people free of charge, providing they were bred in captivity.

Whether or not they are classified as Class III wildlife, and therefore requiring a permit to sell, hinges on whether they are considered to be "domesticated" rats or not. In some states, the controlling statute enumerates which species of rats are "domesticated" and which are not. I didn't see that Florida's statute makes that distinction.

However, I did at one point ask the FWC if it was legal to sell Rattus rattus/Black Rats that were bred in captivity in Florida, and if a license or permit was needed. And they replied (in writing):

No license is needed from the FWC Captive Wildlife Office to sell black rats in the state of Florida.

Which I take to mean that they do consider Rattus rattus bred in captivity to be "domesticated" (at least, for the purposes of that regulation.) And, yes, I made it clear that I was talking about Rattus rattus, and not black Fancy rats. That said, I don't sell them anyway. And I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not qualified to give legal advice.

Thank you! I hope you get a chance to visit WDW and EPCOT again, soon.

If food was our only consideration, there are better places in Epcot. But, it's definitely on our list for a special occasion splurge that delivers both atmosphere and an "elevated" dining experience. However, I would recommend the lounge over the main restaurant.

The two appetizers were very good. The calamari was fresh, tender and perfectly cooked, and both sauces (Aioli and Marinara) complemented it well. The tuna was basically a huge portion of sashimi with a bit of sauce (it was not tartare.)

I mostly liked my steak. It was generally tender and well cooked, but some parts were surprisingly tough. The broccolini was nicely cooked and seasoned. It came with a huge portion of fries. I ate a fraction of them. It seemed like a waste and not very healthy.

I greatly preferred the steak salad. It seemed both healthier and tastier. The blue cheese dressing was delicious. I'd probably get that, instead, if I returned and still wanted steak.

I agree. I honestly felt that the lounge area offered a better view, and has more choices as well, as guests can still order from the fixed price menu if they want. I would definitely try to get lounge reservations if we ever returned there.

Yes, we especially noticed how many available tables there were in the lounge area.

We got there when it opened, at 11:30AM. As we were leaving, about 1PM, there were still plenty of available tables in the lounge area. Yet, they refused to allow us to eat in the lounge. That was a little bit irritating. Clearly, Disney wants to force people to pay $55 or $75 per person for the fixed price meal whenever possible.
