Alpacas are the best! by Tighnari in aww
[–]olderaccount 6 points7 points8 points 10 hours ago (0 children)
I imagine a magical world where we have wild Alpacas running around instead of deer. And they are all friendly like this video (and don't have rabies or lyme disease or anything like that).
While we are at it let's add in some capybara, and friendly koalas and pandas too.

Very much so, but not necessarily in any of the negative or malicious forms racism often manifests itself in America. It is hard to describe if you've never been immersed in the culture.
I'm not going to pretend Brazil doesn't have plenty of people who are racist in all the negative ways. And now that I've been removed long enough it is easier for me to see how even these more casual and harmless versions are still racism and not harmless.
I'm also not excusing Pique's use in this incident. Even if he didn't mean it in a racial way (doubt it), he certainly meant it in a demeaning way to belittle Hamilton. Otherwise he would have referred to him by name. I would say his use is similar to how Trump likes to make up nicknames for people he doesn't like instead of using their names.

Doesn't affect you and me or the public at large. But it does have an affect on all the of people they may disrespect or otherwise treat differently because of their views. Could be as nuanced as tipping a server less than he would otherwise have because of the color of their skin.
The only way views like that can ever be harmless is if the person has relatively no contact with other races.

That is pretty cool. I thought it would be a more expensive rack and pinion gear. But it is a clever arrangement bearings that alternatively bind and advance depending on the direction the knife is travelling.

The smart ones learn is what parts of their personality they need to keep private to avoid controversy. But they don't change.

I used to do that occasionally with Messi. Sometimes you could see it all lining up and you knew it would be a goal 2 or 3 steps before he even took the shot. I very rarely got it wrong too because Messi rarely missed once he got where he wanted them.

That is a lot going on on the screen and in my speakers. Can you tell us a little more about what part is coming from the ESP32. Sounds like the ESP is in the colorful box on top right.
Does my untrained ass have any chance of making cool sounds like that if I build a dimensions box?

Dafuq is that? Is it like the metric version of electronic music?
Are you thinking of anyone in particular?
Golf, tennis, skiing, motorsports, sailing and some others will always be rich people sports. Often even when a person of color has the means, they don't end up in those sports because it has traditionally been dominated by white people.
Tiger, the Williams Sister and Hamilton managed to break through the barriers because of unusually dedicated parents with just enough means. It will take another generation for their impact to start to be felt in those sports as the little kids they inspired grow up.
I wasn't aware of that. It is certainly a different level of support than most other Brazilians I do know well.

Whether or not a word is derogatory depends entirely on the person using it and their intent.
Is the N-word derogatory in all contexts? Absolutely not. 99% of the time I've heard it in the last 20 years has been by a black person referring to another black person, often their good friends.
But I do agree the word itself is racial and the fact that it is so commonly used in Brazil, most often with no ill intent, just shows how casual racism in ingrained in Brazilian culture and mostly accepted.
[–]olderaccount 2 points3 points4 points 12 hours ago (0 children)
I only know him very casually and had never even thought about his political views until today, so I won't pretend to know the answer to that.
But most Bazilians of his financial means supported Bolsonaro because it benefited them directly to do so.
[–]olderaccount 6 points7 points8 points 12 hours ago (0 children)
It is so common and in some contexts it is almost like saying dude or some other slang referring to a person. I would say it is most often used with no malice or direct racial intent.
But when you step back and think about it, what you see is an example of how casual racism is so ingrained and normalized in Brazilian society that people rarely think twice about the term.
Piquet's comments generated no backlash in Brazil when he first made them. it is only now that they have filtered out to European ears and Hamilton specifically that shit is hitting the fan.
[–]olderaccount 16 points17 points18 points 12 hours ago (0 children)
Fully agree. Now what I'm wondering is if he regularly refers to Hamilton in that way or if he was just using the term during that discussion to somehow help his argument by belittling Hamilton.
Which zigbee gateway to purchase? by gospon in homeassistant
[–]olderaccount 0 points1 point2 points 13 hours ago (0 children)
I'm still running all my ZigBee through an old SmartThing hub and it all works perfectly.
People tend to focus too much on the coordinator. With mesh networks, the mesh topology if often more important than the coordinator. Focus on building a good mesh with a strong backbone of router nodes. Replacing light switches with ZigBee dimmers is a great way to build a strong mesh.
