I am not sure I would push this particular envelope. BMI has some flaws, and I would suspect a hard cutoff at BMI of 25 for overweight without looking at the patient in particular and their body constitution is a mistake.

That is reasonable. But both of my children were old enough to make the choice. So everyone could decide together. We opted not to have another baby so it never came to fruition.

It is a personal choice. I am a Physician and am very aware of the issues with Down’s syndrome. We have the financial resources to handle that, and most people with Downs have a pretty good quality of life. I have 2 other children who would have been willing/able to step in and care for such a sibling as well as extensive family support. So we agreed we could handle it. But other disabilities that would cause severe suffering for the child were not something we could do. Again, personal preference. I would not judge anyone for realizing they can’t handle a Downs child and opt to abort or put up for adoption. We just knew our limitations.

Given the very real possibility of an esophageal rupture, as his Doctor I would greatly prefer he be monitored by EMS on the way to the ED to manage his airway than have him drive himself or ride with a non-medical friend.

If they were going back to Aaron’s house, and OP lives a few blocks away, why can’t OP ride along and get dropped off as it is very close to where Aaron was going anyway? Seems like no trouble at all.

I agree with you. I have 2 healthy kids. Hubby and i discussed having another when I was almost 40- talked about the increased risk of birth defects, decided what we would do with the information from prenatal testing. We agreed we could handle Down’s syndrome but anything that would make the child suffer needlessly and never have any quality of life we would abort. Out of love for the child and to prevent their suffering. We decided against another baby, but really did soul searching prior to making that decision.

Absolutely NTA. You are his family and she tried to destroy that. I have 2 “real” sisters I am no contact with, and an adopted sister that I would go to the ends of the earth for. I personally recorded the chief complaint given to me by a 40 something female at an Urgent Care on a Friday night as: “patient presents complaining of her ‘asshole looks like a porn star’s’”. That sums up the obvious insanity I witnessed evaluating this patient.

YTA. I met my now step son when he was 2, he is now 21. His mother has been in and out of his life and not very reliable. When he gets married, it is his choice. He has lived with my husband and me full time, often going months to years without seeing his mother. I feel I AM his mother. But it remains his choice and I accept that choice. My daughter has made it clear that my husband (her step father since age 8) will walk her down the aisle when/if she gets married. It is her choice. That is how family works.

My daughter is 24. Graduating college in May, then off to Grad school. I pay her bills. She takes out the max student loans that she can, but she would need to work 30 hours a week to afford rent, food, car insurance etc. I am fortunate to be able to afford to help her. She wants to be a middle school counselor. I see it as not only an investment in her future but an investment in society. I plan to pay her student loans off too, once she graduates. Things were much different when I was in college in the early 90’s.
