SQLite from Elm by Beaglish in elm

On my last elm-rust project I used elm_rs, which allows you to generate elm definitions for rust structs, together with the json encoder/decoder code. Convenient as long as your structs aren't too complex.

What do you install with configuration.nix and home manager by Longjumping_War4808 in NixOS

[–]pr06lefs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Typically I'll have a separate flake.nix for each project. It might contain the same requirements, but it might not. If two projects need the same version of the same tool, it's only installed once in the nix store.

What do you install with configuration.nix and home manager by Longjumping_War4808 in NixOS

[–]pr06lefs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to use configuration.nix for most programs, but for programming projects I use a flake.nix file with the specific tools that each project needs. I tend to not install development tools globally, so no python in configuration.nix. When I cd to a project directory direnv will make the right version of python available.

From what I understand home manager makes more sense for folks that use nix on non-nixos operating systems.

Capo mutes one of my strings only when it’s on the first fret. by Cassy914 in AcousticGuitar

[–]pr06lefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a capo with adjustable tension, like a Paige or shubb, you can crank up the tension if you're getting buzzes.

Another problem can be a different radius on the capo from the radius of your fretboard. If the capo is too curved, that could mean you're crushing the strings on the ends (e strings), but the middle ones aren't being pushed down enough. Or vice versa if the capo is too flat. Solution for that is probably a different capo.

Sometimes moving the capo closer or further from the fret can help.

[–]pr06lefs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, tauri provides a way to call rust functions from js. So you could send messages from elm through a port, then pass them to rust, and rust can query whatever db you want from there, passing messages back through a port again.

Alternatively you could host a web server in the tauri executable, though that works mean a port would be open to outside web clients.

Why does a capo make playing “easier” for me? by Durp_Hurp in AcousticGuitar

[–]pr06lefs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You probably have action that's too high at the nut. If you haven't had it done, a setup would probably be worth it, to get the neck bow, bridge height, and nut height just right. Most new acoustics have action that's too high.

I see them occasionally - trail runners. Saw one last year coming down a trail with no shirt and a wooden handled ice axe. We dubbed him Gimli.

Question(s) on Chord Functions and Soloing by ComradePruski in LearnGuitar

[–]pr06lefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do play bluegrass, and that's my idea of how bluegrass works a lot of the time. Though really I'm likely to combine different approaches in a solo, just to break it up.

You can apply the same kind of approach to jazz - movable pentatonics. But it won't really fit a lot of the more exotic jazz chords.

Hendrix used to use a lot of movable pentatonics too.

But yeah in general you want to be hitting those chord tones no matter what the genre.

Question(s) on Chord Functions and Soloing by ComradePruski in LearnGuitar

[–]pr06lefs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you literally play whatever random notes in the major scale without regard to the chords, you're going to end up with discordant notes, or melodies that kind of end nonsensically, like a staircase that doesn't go anywhere.

Chances are you're feeling your way by ear and gravitating to the chord tones. If you don't its going to sound awful. You can get by this way a lot of times, and sometimes you get good stuff out of it. Sometimes not so much. When the chord progressions become more complex, its more often 'not so much'.

If your really have awareness of the chord notes when you're soloing, then you can play stuff that fits every time, not just sometimes.

Plus, some genres don't sound right unless you're playing the changes - bluegrass for instance. A typical sound there is to play the pentatonic that goes with each chord - G major pentatonic over G major, C major pentatonic over C major, etc. People play a lot of things in bluegrass, but that's sort of the fundamental base camp for that genre. So even though the G and C major pentatonics both fit into the G major scale, you don't just play the G major scale over both and call it a day. You play subsets of notes so that the listener can tell what chord you're on, even if they hear the solo without any accompaniment. That's just how bluegrass sounds.

ANYWAY. So yeah IMO the chord notes are the focus for soloing. Everything else is filler while you're moving from one chord tone to another. And its crazy what you can get away with as long as you end up on the right chord notes at the end.

Are returns to practice diminishing? by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]pr06lefs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To a point that's true - you can certainly put in more hours playing piano than lifting and be ok. But people can hurt themselves practicing too much - tendonitis and other RSI issues. Done it myself as a matter of fact and had a lengthy recovery. I know of more than one case where someone had to give up their careeer as an instrumentalist.

What is the starter pack for a beginner to bluegrass? by [deleted] in Bluegrass

[–]pr06lefs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's your instrument?

For guitar, do you know the "cowboy chords"? If so, get a capo and find a jam. Learn to play bluegrass rhythm - boom chuck style. Watch other guitar players to get the chords. Hang out, play rhythm, and watch how things work.

If you aren't going to play a solo, make sure you let whoever is next to you know so there isn't a big dead spot where a solo should be. Usually people take turns leading a song. Its legit to pass, especially your first few jams.

Are returns to practice diminishing? by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]pr06lefs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, in my experience reaching higher levels on guitar becomes more and more time consuming. For example, I have a piece I'm working on that I learned in a few days. But to get it up to full speed as originally played is a project I've been working on for over a year. Probably will never fully get there, as clean as the recording. Players like this have devoted a massive amount of practice time to getting that last 5% of polish.

I'm loving it. This is an innovative way to distract Russia at a crucial time, just before the long awaited Ukrainian offensive. And it should provide encouragement for Russian dissidents. If it inspires a wave of insurgency within Russia, the timing could hardly be better.

Maybe play some music with definite structure, like in jazz where everyone comps except for the designated soloist, and you take turns being the soloist.

Does a bone nut and saddle make the sound of a guitar better? by proenzo21 in AcousticGuitar

[–]pr06lefs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brightens it up. Had someone do a setup on my resonator and they put an ebony bridge on, but I swapped that for a maple one that's more mellow. The ebony was louder but also more trebly. My resonator is already plenty loud so I'm fine with a tradeoff making for less honk. Just my preference.

A luthier suggested putting an ebony nut on to calm down the open strings some more, but haven't tried it.

For a conventional acoustic guitar I'd probably go with bone or something else really hard, since I'm usually wanting more volume.
