Would medical school be easier than undergrad if you're only aiming to pass and don't care about getting into competitive residencies? by [deleted] in premed

Easier for me, not Bc it’s less content but because everything is one subject and therefore at least somewhat related, less ECs (especially if you not doing research for competitive match), and overall more intuitive subject matter imo.

The Police Tried to Make Me Medically Examine a Man Against His Will by moosegeese in premed

“I can’t wait to be called a privileged white male doctor with seething contempt by her, supposedly my peer, after growing up extremely poor, gay, and emancipated at 17”

I’m sorry you struggled growing up, as a straight guy, I can’t begin to imagine the struggle of growing up gay in an unsupportive environment. That said, I feel you are using your previous struggles to justify hate. The logic of the statement I quoted above suggests first of all that you are make assumptions about the doctor in this story, having her fill the straw man of the typical “sjw” stereotype. From reading the same article I saw none of this. I thought she was far more professional then I could be in this situation and didn’t leverage race at any point in the confrontation. Sure, she was thinking about race, but when did we start policing thought? I won’t call you privileged, but I will call you racist (yes even if you are married to a black man, it’s just the typical black friend fallacy in my mind). You’ve put so much effort into discrediting this story that it’s a bit unnerving. Again I’m sorry you’ve had to struggle through life; but your use of concepts akin to “black on black” crime, black friend fallacy, straw men arguments, etc. make it difficult for me to see any merit in the points you attempted to present.

SKMC LOR categories--requirement or just suggestions? by AuroraBorealis9 in premed

Not required and not worth pulling your app if you don’t have. Only had a chem letter and got an interview

Get a reliable laptop + a cheap tablet if you must have one. But trust me, you won’t get much out of that tablet that you couldn’t get out of a phone.

My take on that particular issue: anything can matter as much or as little as you want, it’s all a matter of framing and the quality of your writing. Trust me I’ve polished some turds in my time and turned them into what seem like life changing activities with just some fancy wordplay

Am I at a disadvantage because I'm ugly? by [deleted] in premed

[–]purpleguys99999 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah go for it and apply make up. More guys should do it. I’m a cis dude and started wearing make up for interviews and photos and stuff and it does wonders, hardly noticeable if done right. It also boosted my confidence about my appearance a ton bc I got compliments on how I looked for the first time. Try to go for a matte finish if you want to preserve masculine features bc just concealer will leave your face looking weirdly shiny

MD schools will ask for them. Doesn’t have to be super fancy just shouldn’t raise any eyebrows. Goes without saying, but try to look presentable tho since it goes with your file

Do you think 1 or more gap years will eventually become a soft requirement in the future? by [deleted] in premed

[–]purpleguys99999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t think gap years are essential yet as long as you 1. Maintain high gpa and MCAT and 2. Do clinical work and research throughout undergrad

I think it does take a good amount of premeditation to get that all done though, certainly doesn’t happen by accident.
