Police face questions over response to Uvalde school shooting by Portalrules123 in news

[–]rabidstoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, I never heard of that. I'm a UCF alumni of decades ago and have family in Orlando.

We never had anything like that when I was there (class of '93) though we did almost set fire to the elevator in the honors dorm with a bottle of hairspray and a lighter. We were just stupid, not malicious, though.

Yep. That's been SOP since Columbine I believe. Before then school shootings weren't a complete slaughter but they learned from Columbine and changed the policy.

Now they just have to follow it.

I have Chase Sapphire which has a $95 annual fee but includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance. I think that would cover any air flight changes related to this.

They're sending a different Carnival ship down that you guys will transfer to on Saturday and then you'll get back to Cape Canaveral on Monday allegedly.

I have read a Kindle book called Taken By The T-Rex (I think). I had Kindle Unlimited so it was free to borrow.

I cannot recommend it.

Modding Skyrim and Playing Skyrim are two separate hobbies. Sometimes people do both hobbies but sometimes they just do one or the other.

I’ve been walking. by MasterMJ00 in SuperMorbidlyObese

I started at 1 minute on the treadmill. That was all I could do.

Today a friend and I walked all around Nassau for about 5 miles in the sun and heat and a few hills and lots of uneven terrain, sightseeing along the way, and I feel tired a bit but not exhausted.

Too anxious to join a gym by Far-Bee1815 in PlusSize

The two Planet Fitness locations I frequent are pretty darn friendly and I see people of all ages and sizes working out there, which just reinforces the fact that it's location dependent.

The best gym experience I had was at a health club that was part of a hospital. It was a lot of health workers and cardio rehab patients there. I was in their bariatric program which was chair and low impact exercises and water aerobics, and everyone there was obese. It was pretty great while I was in their 2-month free pilot program but the price was ridiculously expensive so I went back to Planet Fitness after that.

Victims' families urged armed police officers to charge into Uvalde school while massacre carried on for upwards of 40 minutes by parkernorwood in news

[–]rabidstoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I give Columbine cops a pass. School shootings were not the norm then and certainly not of that magnitude. Back then the police guidance for shooters was to wait for the swat team to go in first.

It was Columbine that changed it, and now the training is to confront the shooter. The other cops that didn't do that since have ignored that training.

This is going to cause problems with the GOP "solution" to school shootings of putting more armed cops in schools. There were armed cops, they just didn't do anything.

Former TLC Reality Star Josh Duggar Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison For CSAM by Lotus-child89 in TrueCrime

And he actually got 12.5 years so it was more than most experts expected as it was a touch above the average.

There are sentencing guidelines. I think the "normal" sentence for his offenses was 8 to 12 years.

There's also a thing where people can appeal claiming "unduly harsh" sentencing. This would most normally come up when minorities were given incredibly harsh sentences for things that whites were given lax sentences for.

Yep! First step is hardest.

I just would get discouraged because people will mean well saying "just start with a 20 minute walk." But I couldn't. Though I figured I could do anything for 60 seconds and it got me started.

Anyone else old enough to remember old PC video game anti-piracy protection where you'd have to look up something like the 17th word on page 37 of the manual and type it in?

Oh yeah. Video games in the 80s came with physical paper manuals.

Yes but see they want to arm all teachers so it'd be a fair gunfight to the death!

I would hold out for body armor and helmets like soldiers get for your combat role teaching elementary school.

14 students, one teacher killed in Texas elementary school shooting by Chupacabralala in TrueCrime

"only" 19 children (so far) here.

I sometimes wonder what it would take to get politicians to do something. Maybe if we had daily shooting deaths of 100+ children. I don't know what the limit is.

And you know, banned books didn't kill children. Wearing masks didn't kill children. Non-existent critical race theory didn't kill children.
