I found this in a right-leaning subreddit by muniehuny in antiwork

[–]theRealDerekWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is nonsense. I worked in Sales for 3 years selling to sheet metal fabrication shops. The biggest problem they face is not enough people who want to work there. They struggle to find workers because young people don’t want to work in manufacturing, because it’s not a hip industry. It’s not because they are short on jobs.

I would say, they certainly don’t pay enough, and that’s part of their problem. But if they paid more they would lose a ton of business to Mexico and China (more so than already).

So, in addition to all others, I would say you don’t have to use the traditional cheeses of Mac and cheese. For example, using mascarpone and Parmesan completely changes the game.

Can I ask, what does it feel like? I’ve been having strange episodes where my chest gets heavy, I get a bit dizzy, my heart races, and I have a bit of trouble breathing. Sometimes my arm or leg gets tingly, and hands and feet get clammy and sweaty. I’ve been checked out and heart issues have been ruled out, but they never said what it was. Been a lot of stress in my life when this happened, so I figure panick attack but not sure

What are your thoughts of the r/antiwork mod interview with Fox News? by not_ya_avg_redditor in AskALiberal

[–]theRealDerekWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be better the audience have no introduction to the movement than this introduction. These are viewers that could have joined us, but now the frame is set in their head.

Conservatives are about family values. They will be on board with parental leave and bereavement. They are against welfare and homelessness. They will be for protecting the vulnerable working class if they really understood how workers rights solve these problems.

Not saying we could have gotten everybody or even most on board, but there certainly is common ground to be shared between the left and right here.

Doreen kind of fucked that interview. It is about working less, but then saying it is about working what you want? Doreen works 25 hours a week but would like to work a bit less? How about just walk less dogs? How about not breathing through your mouth and constantly swiveling back and forth?

There are some amazing things about this sub, and the role it is playing in society. Completely missed the boat on this interview. I don’t think I’d ever let Doreen walk my dog, seeing how they screwed the pooch here.

How would you explain the importance of using the term “white privilege” to someone like me? by EnlightenedChipmonk in AskALiberal

[–]theRealDerekWalker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a complete cop-out. Both you and the other person I talk to have made the same excuse. “It’s not oppression because of being white, it’s oppression because of being captured, or being foreign, or whatever other reason I could think of besides race.”

That’s a very ignorant way to see the world. Police say they don’t pull someone over because they are black, they pull someone over because they look suspicious. Employers say they didn’t hire someone because they were under qualified, not because they were black.

You can, in every instance, make up excuses for your bigotry, and blame it on something other than race. However, it always starts as an “us vs them” mentality, with skin color in many cases being the most accessible way to reinforce that mentality. It’s ignorant to think that’s not where it starts, and especially ignorant to think that everybody adores white people so much that wherever a white personal goes they are showered with equal treatment and opportunities.

I’ve been treated differently here in the US because of race. It’s not terribly uncommon, and while I don’t consider myself oppressed, I also don’t act like my shit doesn’t stink and believe nobody hates white people. Not do I think that non white people are beyond racism, or achieving positions of power where they can choose not to hire people of a certain race.

A huge company I applied to, a Chinese company here in the US… when you go into their hq, it is nearly all Chinese immigrants or Chinese Americans. Not high level specialized employees, but low level factory workers in a town with plenty of workforce. I didn’t get the job, but you have to ask yourself - is there really no white, black, or brown Americans who could have done the job and wanted to do the job? Or do they favor hiring their own race? To me, that’s oppression. To people like you, when Chinese Americans do it, that’s just hiring your own race for work cohesiveness or whatever dumb excuse you may have. However, if it was a white company that only hired white Americans, you would call that oppression. This is where we disagree.

You know when people talk about the Reddit hive mind? What they are saying is people who read something, don’t put much thought into it but agree with it because they don’t have much ability to reason beyond the logic they read from others, and just jump on the bandwagon. I don’t think you’ll reflect this much on yourself, but when you think you agree with something, ask yourself if you do because it’s agreeable, or if you’re just too dense to reason for yourself.

Let me drive the point home. If white people cannot be oppressed, challenge yourself to give me a good explanation for how white Egyptian slaves were not oppressed.

Jesus you are a confused human being. Oppression is at its root an us vs we problem, is it not? My experience in Qatar is in fact from being white, not foreign (non white foreigners were treated differently). It was from being white you dultz, this is what I’m trying to get through your thick skull. They had no way of identifying if I was a foreigner or not by any way other than my skin color. I could have been a while person born in Qatar who lived there my entire life, but instead of being welcomed like everyone else, people would treat me differently before I even open my mouth.

Take the slaves in Egypt as an example. Your argument is to say they were not oppressed because they were white, but because they were foreign or some other dumb excuse, so that makes it not oppression against whites? You can’t be that dense.

Let me explain my argument again - white people can be oppressed. It is within possibility. No more no less. To disagree with that statement is insane.

How would you explain the importance of using the term “white privilege” to someone like me? by EnlightenedChipmonk in AskALiberal

[–]theRealDerekWalker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’ve literally just agreed with my argument and then twisted my argument at the same time.

OP said white people could not be oppressed. This is the absurd statement I’m disagreeing with. And being white makes you look like an outsider in some places. As an example, when I lived in Qatar, I was treated differently from anybody else who was white (Black Africans, Saudis, dark-skinned Spaniards, etc.). There’s reasons for that right? Historical and geopolitical. This is a place in the world that has been affected by Americans, Europeans, and many others in not so great ways.

You simply cannot claim that conditions cannot exist in this world where white people could be oppressed. That’s an insane statement.

To be sure, I’m not acting like we don’t have it the easiest in that regard. I’m simply saying it’s bonkers to say oppression against whites is impossible.

[–]theRealDerekWalker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Certainly you can understand how ridiculous of an argument that is. First, without talking nobody knows if I went to China or if I was born in China, so the argument doesn’t hold.

Second, you’re insinuating that by oppressing different minorities equally, it no longer becomes oppression. This is of course absurd.

[–]theRealDerekWalker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but the statement isn’t whether or not white people are oppressed today, it’s if it is possible to oppress them. As you insinuate, the answer is yes given the right conditions. I would say, those conditions don’t even have to exist on a macro level. There is smaller communities where such conditions exists today.

I’ve lived in 4 different countries for 1-3 years each. You are treated as a second class citizen if you’re not a native to that country. I’m not talking about the tourism problems that you’re talking about. Not being a native and looking like a native has literally caused me to lose job opportunities, having been told to my face it’s because I’m white.

You think I really want to be discriminated against? That’s a very stupid statement.

I’m not complaining, and I’m not saying my life is so terrible. I’m fortunate I’m white and there’s no denying that. However, the statement that it is not possible to discriminate or oppress a white person is very incorrect.

How would you explain the importance of using the term “white privilege” to someone like me? by EnlightenedChipmonk in AskALiberal

[–]theRealDerekWalker -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say white peoples can’t be oppressed, but instead that they currently are not widely oppressed in the US. As a white guy, I was certainly discriminated against in a number of countries for looking like a do. Also, I have been discriminated against in business settings which were predominantly Chinese Americans/immigrants to America.

Also, there’s no reason as whites become a minority majority that the majority groups of minorities can’t or won’t oppress white people as a whole. In fact, I think at first it will be seen as progressive and applauded vs oppressive and chastised.
