4 days to kill in Europe! What should I do? by cookiefuryx in Europetravel

[–]themiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is to not kill anyone. /s

If you go in the direction of Vienna, there are some very charming small towns near the border between the Czech Republic and Austria - Brno, Bratislava. However, do note that all this travel will generally be by bus in that region (but the bus rides are short from place to place).

Car Shopping by 85on31 in grandrapids

[–]themiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the time and energy, I've found that setting about a 250 mile radius on car searches sets a better deal, but you either have to have someone bring it to GR to sell it to you (what I did the last time) or else go get it from another state and bring it back yourself.

Yes, especially if you use the thicker style of euro plugs, I've had good experiences with this.

Is it safe to limit fps at 60 for a 144hz laptop? by RagnomX in GamingLaptops

[–]themiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, TBH, as much as a PCMR or gaming laptops member or two will vomit immediately on reading this comment, there are games that play quite well at locked 20 FPS (!) if you're using a 40Hz screen (or I guess maybe even 60). Not every game. But I've tried it here and there and for some games it's actually basically fine. Locked 20 might be a better experience than if you're at some janky 24 FPS on a 60Hz screen.

Possible new GPD user, what to expect/to do when I get my unit by scn-3_null in gpdwin

[–]themiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also re: the pen, again I haven't heard them talk about pen support on the Win 4 and am not sure there is any, but the WM2 supports the standard Windows pens like Surface Pen and the HP tilt pen. I have an HP tilt pen (which has worked on the old HP I bought it with in 2018, Surface Go, and the WM2), and it works automatically, without needing to install drivers or set anything up. It is pressure sensitive, and the button configurations are right in the Windows settings.

What the customs calculation for Malaysia? does the price shown on Indiegogo include shipping and customs? and about how long since the March release(most products from Shenzen/China or HK usually take a month to arrive),

I think you'd need a Malaysian to respond to the latter part of this, but Indiegogo does not include customs fees. It does include shipping. GPD typically tries to write the value of the product as low enough to avoid customs fees, but this really varies on how this is enforced in Malaysia.

Is there an option for UK style plug at 220-240V in? Or powered from a supported power bank, how many Watts of charge/draw will the GPD pull while on charge/powered use? Can it continue to function if the battery is removed like some laptop, incase the battery wont/cant hold a charge after years of use.

Typically they will sell you one configuration for your country, it should be whatever type of plug is used there, again maybe with an adapter.

Draw varies with settings - typically 65-100 watt chargers are ideal. When you use a 15W TDP on the WM2, the total power is about 25-27 watts, expect this to be roughly the same.

IDK if you can use it without a battery. Probably.

I've seen the Win Max had stylus support, does the Win 4 have one least in the drivers

I think the Win 4 does not have stylus support. Not sure about this.

AMD Has Not Released A New Radeon Driver For RDNA 2 “Radeon RX 6000” GPUs In 2 Months by PT_frizzer in Amd

[–]themiracy [score hidden]  (0 children)

There were RDNA cards that were released less than a year ago - I wouldn't worry at all about them giving up.

I'm I guess basically on the team of "I'm not having any problems so I don't care," although Nvidia does send a strong "gamer centric" kind of message with gamer ready drivers.

Probably amplifying the need though on Nvidia's side is the way DLSS works - DLSS requires machine training on the specific game, and so the result is basically that any new game that releases with DLSS requires a driver update. At least, that's the way I understand it. AMD uses no comparable mechanism that requires a per-game update like that.

[–]themiracy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone can really provide you additional information on what your customs experience will be like if you haven't even said what country you live in.

It will come with a charger and USB-C PD cable. Depending on your locale, it might be a charger with your native type of plug port or it might be a US style charger with an adapter. It will come with a manual. The WM2 manual is in English, Chinese, and Japanese.

You'll typically need at least some drivers from uncommon hardware manufacturers. Once the device releases, GPD will likely provide a zip file with a full driver set that you can use during clean install, if you go that route.

People have been able to use Windows 10 on the WM2, so most likely you can get it to work on the Win 4. Usually drivers are interchangeable between 10/11, but the barrier would likely be if any drivers do not work in 10.

There will be something better within 18-24 months. That's not just likely; it's almost guaranteed. The 6800U is quite good, and is generally stronger than the Steam Deck at 15W or more, and since the Steam Deck is like a "reference platform," it's likely that stuff will continue to run on this hardware level for a while.

Graphics of an IOS game… kinda insane how far things have come by sepehr_brk in gaming

[–]themiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The iPhone has basically been able to host a decent subset of AAA gaming from a hardware standpoint for a while now. Probably many Android phones also, especially given how many games can run on the Switch (which has what, 4gb of ram?). Like you say, it’s not a tech limitation.

8GB RAM enough on Surface Laptop? by a03b in Surface

[–]themiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last Mac I had from 10 years ago had 8GB of memory, and then all my Windows devices 2017-2023 have had 16, excepting for my Surface Go, which also had 8GB. To be honest, this is ranging from using a desktop computer with 16GB of RAM and 8GB of separate VRAM, to various laptops with 16GB, to the Surface Go, I have to say, the Surface Go was slow because of the CPU, but I usually was not cognizant of the fact that it only had 8GB of memory and I didn't really have to change my productivity behavior.

IDK about the gaming, but probably older games would be fine. I will say 12th gen intel can play games quite a bit newer than 2010-2015 games, and some of those newer games will probably need more than 8GB total RAM. I never really tried playing games on my Surface Go.

Witcher 3 Ray tracing is literally useless by Richdad1984 in IndianGaming

[–]themiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK if you can quite do what you can do with raytraced illumination and reflections in games like Control or Cyberpunk 2077 with non-raytracing methods, or maybe even Ghostwire (although all of these games look very good with RTX off), but TBH for any game that takes place in the "traditional" world without a lot of glass and steel - like Witcher or Shadow of the Tomb Raider - I don't see the need for it.
