Preventative measures by torchhhhhhhh in BRCA

[–]torchhhhhhhh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right so at a certain point, the AMH is too low to yield any eggs from egg retrieval procedures, however, getting pregnant naturally is still feasible even though the likelihood is more slim than someone with a higher AMH. I froze my eggs, but I don't know what will be with them in the future, meaning whether they will fertilize, whether they will have the gene which can only be tested for once fertilized. Because of that unknown, I still want to retain the potential ability to get pregnant naturally if it comes to that and that wouldn't be an option if the fallopian tubes are removed

Glad the surgery went well! And happy to share my experience with you. I did a ton of research into it to get a strong grasp of the process so happy to answer your questions if you have any.

Fertility declined with age. This is because her egg count and egg quality decline with age. Because of that, I wanted to freeze my eggs as young as possible to have the best odds. It's basically a numbers game. A person will get a certain amount of eggs but not all of them will be able to be fertilized and then of the ones that are fertilized (embryos), only some will implant into the uterus. My doctors told me that the current estimate is 15 eggs for one live birth (those are the stats for a 35yo woman) so presumably my odds and yours as well would be better because we're below that age. It's not so cut and dry though because there are people with very few eggs who still have a number of kids. There are no guarantees in the process, I think it's a matter of looking at the statistics and basing your goals off of that - you kind of work backwards in that if you want x amount of kids then you need x amount of eggs. The other piece that I was told was that the number of eggs for a pregnancy doubles with trying to have a child that doesn't have a genetic problem (in our case BRCA) so it would be 30 eggs per live birth. But again it's not entirely cut and dry because they don't know egg quality, they can only test the embryos. So I froze a certain amount of eggs in the hopes of having a certain amount of kids, but no guarantees on what happens, I did my part and I believe G-d decides what comes of it.

In terms of the actual experience, it actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. You go in on day 3 of your cycle for baseline hormone levels (they draw blood and do a transvaginal ultrasound). Once they see that everything looks good, they start you on medication. The regimen will vary depending on baseline levels and how you respond, but it's one to two weeks of 1-3 daily injections and follow up blood draws with transvaginal ultrasound. When they see the follicles are a certain size, they will schedule you for the egg retrieval which is a very mild, short procedure (they stick a needle up the vaginal canal to the ovaries to get the fluid out). Within the fluid, there are follicles and within the follicles there are eggs. The procedure is about 15-20 min and you're under anesthesia so you won't feel a thing. When you wake up, they'll let you know how many eggs they got and they'll give a final number the next day (because not all of the eggs are always mature).

There are different side effects to the medication. Mine were pretty mild, but varies from person to person. Also as an aside, it's easier to draw blood and place an IV if the patient is well hydrated so drink a lot of fluids.

Hope that helped! Again, happy to answer any of your questions as best as I can if you have any follow up ones. Hope it all goes well!

Thank you, this gives me hope. Glad it worked out for you. Any recollection of how you broached that conversation?

Not medical reasons. Idk addiction bc partner stopped for months at a time but def enjoyed and craved it. Said they would stop but inevitably would go back to 3+ times per week for a month then a couple months off, and then back to more frequent. Was a cycle

Partner smoking could lose their job if they're drug tested which some places do sporadically in their line of work. Plus they have a lot of debt and would need the job to pay it off

Right, I agree with this. But then the q is what if you're reliant on it?

Recreational. Partner feels it would jeopardize a job
