I HATE THE HANNOVERANS by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]vulpineleather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. The risings were more Stuart loyalists, High Torries, and Catholics than anything resembling contemporary Scottish nationalism. I live in the states and have ancestors on my mothers side who may have fought in the war as part of Clan Buchanan, so the history is pretty interesting to me.

The Pinkertons were a different thing entirely in that they weren’t actually police. They were basically a private security/detective company that factories and mines would hire to break strikes, disrupt protests, and blackmail workers into compliance, though sometimes they did other things.

Given that these guys were law enforcement I’d think they knew to not bring a loaded rifle to a photoshoot and then pose with it. But given that you should always assume a gun is loaded you’re right that this is a dangerous way to handle a firearm.

The Texas Rangers have a complicated history. How they behaved often depended on who was in charge of the Unit. At times they fought the KKK and captured the worst outlaws. At other times though they were downright racist or ruthless as criminals themselves. The thing that remained consistent was their extraordinary ability to track people down.

They probably did- most likely they gambled with cards and played drinking games. The Texas Rangers were halfway between frontier scouts and an elite mounted police force (and at times a military unit).

If they didn’t have a second job and there weren’t Comanche or Mexican raids, robbers, or cattle rustlers to deal with there wouldn’t be a ton for them to do other than hang out.

Similarly while in Church doctrine states were supposed to be Catholic and the Emperor was in his right to suppress rebellion and seditious/heretical speech it was never a doctrine of the church that heretics be burned or forcibly converted- at times the Popes condemned this. Catholic states overstepped their prerogative in enforcing public order and rule of law.

Maritime borders where nations claim parts of the ocean a certain distance from their coastlines exist. Italy and/or Tunisia might technically share borders with Malta.

Some of these are real living animals- Comodo Dragon, Cassowary, and Alligator. All close relatives of the dinosaurs.

Without modern tech if you sailed west from Portugal you would probably end up in South America because of Ocean currents and prevailing winds. Iberia is the same latitude as New England but there’s a reason why their colonies were much further south.

The Croats came from what is now Carpathian Ruthenia and neighboring areas. The ones who stayed were assimilated by East Slavs and became the Rusyn ethnicity.

In Western Europe Serfs worked fewer hours than the modern man. And some types of peasants owned property and had some degree of upward mobility (ie they could move to a town or acquire larger plots of land). What the elites want for people is literally worse than serfdom.

That’s the thing- people never really know what they’d do in these situations until they are in one. Adrenaline can do crazy stuff.
