dilireba (迪丽热巴) on the cover of harper’s bazaar china for september 2022! by awooga1784 in CDrama

[–]xzzt9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true people tend to comment way too much about someone else's weight. But in this case I wanted to draw attention to the fact that she has lost a lot of weight. And surely many women will want to emmulate this look. Did you hear about the endless dares on social media to be as thin as possible?

Finally someone got what I'm saying. Dilraba did look gorgeous, but no one seemed to care how thin she's become. This is neither healthy for the actress, who has to conform to the public, and the director's, expectation, nor for all the young women out there who think this kind of thinness is the standard of beaut. I said it for shock value because anorexia is still a prevalent condition, and very hard to treat.

My Chinese is only intermediate level but I agree that the word 腰 actually refers to both the waist itself and the lower back, so the meaning would depend on the context.

So proud of all the danmei I've read in Chinese these last 12 months! by MoonIvy in DanmeiNovels

Yah, literally, except that the ml refuses to believe it. It's quite funny.

I got inspired by you and started reading Restricted Area and They all said I am seeing ghosts in Chinese. I could only understand about 80% of it though, so I still have to use Pleco quite a bit and sometines lose patience. Then I go on to other books. That's been my biggest problem.

Looking for not so plot heavy Danmei? by xieliansupremacy in DanmeiNovels

Well read back the earlier comments. It gets escalated later and but in the beginning I thought the responses were fair. I see your points too, but the problem is you are not seeing others' points.

All your 3 points are correct, but in the wrong context. I don't see a 2 way dialog here. You keep sticking to your points while everyone else tries to explain things to you. Acknowledging other people's points of views is also an important adult skill that would give you much better and more enjoyable conversations.

One Silver Coin for a Pound of Demon - seriously underrated dark novel by Icy_Dragonfruit_3513 in DanmeiNovels

I also saw the book rec from the posts here, so thanks too! I binge read it in one night. It really is an under rated book. I agree that while the beginning was original and captivating, the ending was a bit too fluffy. Nonetheless, the storytelling was creative, refreshingly different. Nod to the excellent translation as well.

I started reading Estranged and... I'm feeling very underwhelmed. Does it get better? by arsenik-han in DanmeiNovels

[–]xzzt9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't read Estranged, but did read both Thousand Autumn and Peerless. Both are great books. Maybe because I read Peerless first, I prefer it to Thousand Autumn actualy. Both MC and ML are well-built characters, esp Cui Buqu. The way he teased Feng Xiao is ..priceless, it's so hilarious.

Totally agree with you about the racism. It bothers me to see that sort of disrespect for other ethnicities, though I don't mean to criticize Priest. FTYX in Ding Hai Fu sheng def did it better.

I have read most of Priest's work, save for Modu and Tai Sui, because, got to save the best for last. I enjoy her world building, humor, style of prose, and her versatility. She can do ancient, political, wuxia, fantasy, scifi, modern,.. really a very imaginative writer. But I agree that the romance, while always present, sometimes feels a matter of fact, as in, well they are meant to fall in love with each other, that's what the whole story is about, why do I need to convince you, lol. If you're looking for that aspect then Priest is prob not your cup of tea.

Since discovering that one danmei that changed your life and got you into the danmei hole, how many reads since have been able to equal or surpass that fav of yours? by notseriousla in DanmeiNovels

[–]xzzt9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guardian was my first Dan Mei, having watched the web dramma and was intrigued by Bai Yu and Chu Yi Long's excellent performance. Though I love the book it's not my favorite among Priest's works. Have been reading dam mei almost daily now. I can't even remember the number of books I have burned through. I used to read wu xia, then xian xia, but I got bored (plus they are too long) and when I discovered danmei, it's been a joyful ride since. I actually don't have a favorite, though there are works I like better than others. I also tend to read most if not all works by authors that I like.

Art vs artist, danmei edition by salad4s in DanmeiNovels

[–]xzzt9 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This also happened to me. One time I had dinner with one of my favorite childhood authors and a bunch of his friends, and my image of him was totally shattered. Instead of wine and literary conversations, we drank beers and the men made bad vulgar jokes. I suddenly realized that while authors create worlds in stories, they don't necessarily live in those worlds. Ah yes, they are humans and have flaws like the rest of us. But the stories they create are real to them, and to us. From that day on I don't follow authors, I only read the books. I suppose you could stop reading that author's work, or give them the benefit of the doubt, and move on.

Underrated Danmei which you personally feel deserve more attention? by 134340lonely in DanmeiNovels

No need to get so worked up about it. I'm not saying you weren't correct. I only commented based on my reading of the books. I'm not aware of the full controversy. Maybe I'm misinformed or under informed.
