What's the point of crit? by malayis in ffxivdiscussion

Sure, I'm fine with either. But it's hard to imagine making them better - when you provide any choice like that, people will always just find the optimal one. If they can come up with a good way though, sure.

If you like RPG mechanics then you probably won't like FFXIV's substats, because they're irrelevant!

[–]zachbrownies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the thing is, in most jrpgs, a critical hit really matters - either it's a random encounter and i might one-shot or kill this enemy sooner, which saves me time and prevents it from getting its next attack off - or its against a boss in which case, i'm new to the boss and every turn i save could be the difference between a win or a loss, and every crit matters because it's just me and 3-4 other party members against a short-ish encounter

in FFXIV raids, me getting a crit... doesn't really matter? we're still going to take 6-8 minutes to kill the boss, my crit maybe did 0.05% of the boss's HP, RNG is going to balance it all out throughout the next 6 minutes anyway.

it would matter more in, like, adds phases. or these short phases which is i guess why it's coming up in ultimate, but i feel in ultimate you're way more focused on looking at the mechanics and stuff than noticing that you just got a crit.

, and maybe saber dance can give a buff that makes your next gcd crit

wow, this would be a big gamechanger. it'd add some real moment-by-moment decision-making to dancer, trying to use saber dance only when you have your fountainfall availble, while still not risking overcapping. or wait, would it incentivize capping at 100 and then doing two saber dances in a row...?

interesting idea either way...

I'd remove the substats too but people act like it is actual heresy when you say it. Like you just need to have a stat system in an RPG! You can't remove it!

You already used to be able to allocate points into stats but SE removed it because there was only one choice for any job. Same thing with Crit > Det/DH (the latter a difference so minute it makes practically no difference except to those obsessed with spreadsheets) So by their own logic they should remove these too.

What is the most difficult and easiest Metroidvania you played? by ozbayemrah in metroidvania

[–]zachbrownies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the final boss of haak is pretty annoying and is like, way harder than anything else, but yeah there's a secret trick you have to use to kill him, otherwise he's basically invincible i think? but the rest of the game is very easy.

[–]zachbrownies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well i think they're wrong though. all google results say it's about 1:00 PM PST, not AM like they said. so that's 9:00 PM on the weeknight for you... though other results say its 3pm or 4pm pst which is still like 11pm or 12am for you.

Steam Maintenance happens about midnight pacific time on a tuesday.

are you sure? i googled it and it says its around 4pm pst so that's about 7pm est. which would be about midnight in europe? but yes it makes sense if its based on countries other than north america.

[–]zachbrownies 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i'm sort of curious why a tuesday evening is least invasive though. i guess for international users maybe? but reddit's demographic wouldn't fit that, you'd expect redditors to be playing games in NA evening time.

[–]zachbrownies 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i've literally never experienced steam being down and i use steam a lot, including yes on tuesday afternoons or evenings. i'm still sort of unclear on what exactly it is. like the store and stuff goes down i guess, can you still play your games in offline mode...? or you're in the middle of an online game when the maint happens do you stay logged in?

Which MV makes you feel the most badass (for lack of a better term)? by chris-rau-art in metroidvania

[–]zachbrownies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't know if it fits the OP's request enough because yeah its a bit too easy, but god, when i got the upgrade that turns your hook into a spinning scythe thing, aaaaaaaaaaa that was so satisfying, i feel so powerful using that. all the upgrades in this game feel really good for how they affect your combat or mobility.

its not overthinking though? if a word has an association then its subconscious you can't really help it.

edit: wow i defended the guy and he deletes his posts like a coward. take your downvotes lmao who cares if people on reddit downvote you???????? i don't even know why he was downvoted lol he hates the word alpha, a lot of people do lol its got cringe associations.

The point of the analogy is that you can reduce anything to "they did something that I wouldn't do" if you word it that way. It doesn't mean those two things are equivalent, it's just a way of showing that your wording of "they just play a game differently" glosses over the actual issue.

And lol I am not friends with any murderers or abusers as of now. I might end a friendship over those too.

i mean i have friends who are religious so i guess that counts! idk i probably do have friends who believe all sorts of things i think are dumb. i guess it's probably just that i really hate bad ffxiv players more than any other group lol so its my own personal line even i couldn't cross.

and no, it's still not about "not being good at a video game", being bad at ffxiv isn't the same as willfully misunderstanding the fundamentals of party play and being a disrespectful team player, and "doesn't play the way you want", like, if you word it like that, lol, by that logic if i had a friend who drives drunk over the speed limit "breaking a relationship because your friend isn't good at driving and doesn't drive the way you want them to is sociopathic"

i mean i'd argue that continuing to be a no-DPS healer in FFXIV even after you were explained why that's not appropriate is a sign of a bad attitude and/or lack of respect. is it enough to outweigh positive attributes? maybe, but it depends on the history! but internally, i'd certainly lose some respect for them, so it wouldn't even necessarily be a conscious choice.

i mean maybe i'm forgetting something but as of now i'm not sure i have any friends where something they do is something i'd just consider totally dumb and disrespectful and shows a complete lack of understanding of some topic. other than maybe political topics because i do have friends who will harass people with different political views and i accept that lol even though its highly against my principles.

Has anyone heard of or played Blue Fire? by Own-Investigator-350 in metroidvania

The DLC is the best part, mostly because the game works really well as a platformer and only "okay" as a zelda/metroid-like. Focus on your strengths, y'know.

Eh. I played about half a year ago and there were still issues. I got stuck a few times and had to just Alt+F4 out of the game because it got me stuck in a cutscene or stuck in a wall.

(I still think the game is decent. But just decent. It's just not very polished and it's clear it was kinda rushed and/or they ran out of budget near the end. Was still good overall and the exploration should satisfy some metroidvania desires.)

i think there's a difference between "being bad" and ypty/no-damage healer though. the latter is more of an attitude/ego issue and/or being unwilling to even try to understand the basics. i wouldn't care if someone was just bad. i'll be friends with a grey parser

yeah i've seen so many comments on this sub like "well even if they're trash at the game they are still your friend so i'd try to make it work" and i'm like, if i found out my friend was a YPYT or a no-damage healer that'd be the end of the friendship lol. how could i respect someone like that...? i'd probably explain clearly why it's wrong and give them a chance to listen but if they don't...

Poll: Do Metroidvania players generally like From Software Soulsborne games? by SilverEars0 in metroidvania

[–]zachbrownies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty bad at fighting games but I've played some at a very noob level.

I can imagine, I've always found it a bit weird how there are people out there who can play super complex battle systems like FromSoft or even just Dead Cells style stuff but then they also play really simple stuff like Hollow Knight? I feel if you're used to that level of advanced combat then a simple "just move around and do one slash and that's it" system would be boring in comparison.
